Apparently it is still a problem, at least as of December 2015...

Perceived as a win-win way to get rid of the tires filling Florida landfills by putting them to use as an artificial reef off the coast of Fort Lauderdale, about two million tires were bound with metal clips and dumped in the Atlantic Ocean back in 1972.

The Gumps do an excellent job in this area (and I hate to praise them for anything). It's really cool to be out with a Captain that's says "this is a washer and dryer" or "this is a Buick station wagon". And they let you pull a few off each little spot and zip on to the next one. Pretty much every one held fish, and he had enough marked that he would only hit each spot once every couple of weeks. Of all the dedicated funds Bobby boy raided so he could be the no new taxes Presidential candidate, wiping this one out pissed me off the most.

Especially when you consider that it was illegal and not really even the state's money to be taking.

This was fallout from structural failures during Ivan/Katrina/Rita and a direct result of Mocando. It had very little to do with Obama. API/MMS and everyone realized there was a problem with "Idle Iron" in the GOM. This was not "Obama's doing".
