Choirboy was catching some kind of "flatheads" in the river. Said he couldn't get away from them, maybe he can help you out.

Find a mechanic that will give you a bucket of old sparkplugs and drain plugs to use as weights.

River is up a little right now so if you know where some sand bars are under water that would be a good place to tightline.

Find some water running in or out of the river headed into a lake or bayou and set trotlines with the current.

Use different kinds of bait until you find what they like the best.

Some baits that I have had good luck with over the years:

Cut shad
Night crawlers
Goldfish
pieces of sponge soaked in blood/liver
Catalpa worms (If you can find them)
Soap

As far as bait, shad, night crawlers, and chicken gizzards have always worked for me.

Chicken hearts work really good too, lots of blood and hold together better than livers. You can also get the salmon egg sacks that they sell and cut a chicken liver into quarters, put each piece in the egg sack and tie it up. Bluegill also work good, especially for flatheads.

Really, I'll collect them in my garden and give post giveaways throughout the year. Those things destroy my pepper and tomato plants. Fast, too. The solid green ones are damn near impossible to notice until you have a plant with no leaves and a pile of worm shite under it.

Tie some heavy weights at the bottom of your line then put a treble hook slightly above it, then another one about 8 inches above the first, then a 3rd one 10 inches above that one. bait with chicken livers.

Cast far out and wait.

Those are horn worms, not catalpa.

I've always wondered if this works. I've never dedicated the time to giving it a shot. Any specific type or scent? Word is that channel cats prefer Dial to Irish Spring.

I've always wondered how they get it to stay on a hook.

The soap we use is a Mexican brand in a pink wrapper. I have never known anyone to use ivory, irish spring,....ect.

The soap is soft enough to mold on the hook but sturdy enough to stay on.

I used beef heart. Pretty cool to cut open a cow heart and know the anatomy.

Think I can catch some catfish in Lake Bruin this weekend?

I'm just planning on sitting on the pier since I don't feel like fooling with a boat. And I'm not waking up early.

Curious why you think this. There are a TON of fish that come out of the river that are eaten. Including many crawfish/catfish that are sold in seafood stores all over south Louisiana.
