My dad sent this pic this evening. Boat and trailer have become a memorial. Flowers, balloons, ribbons. Damn.

That is a sad sight for sure knowing it's highly unlikely the two guys will even be found, and it would be the miracle for the ages if either of them were found alive after all this time.

Tough times for the families involved for sure.

The thread on tht has devolved into some delusional posters and a couple blaming the coast guard calling off the search too early.

That picture is a great illustration of doing a little safety evaluation before going out. Maybe a few pieces of safety hardware and these guys are safe at home tonight. But those kids are less a dad. Keep safety first, baws.

Sad situation but these guys made a lot of bad mistakes and unfortunately it cost them their lives.

What mistakes did they make? Don’t be a jack wagon. 1,000s of guys go fishing in the ocean every day without an epirb. As far as I’ve seen it’s never been confirmed if they had a radio or not. We have no idea what happened.

For all we know they did everything right except bring an epirb and something out of their control happened.

regulations

I am against more regulation

I don’t think it is the gov’s job to protect people from bad or stupid choices
I'm with you. The old farts roasted me the other day thinking the way.

Reports are they didn’t even have a functioning vhf radio on board. Running 30 miles out into the Gulf Stream in a single engine boat without even a vhf radio is a big risk.

I have redundant radios, bilge pumps, manual bilge pump, etc but I’ll have a personal EPRIB before next summer season. I was on a trip with none of those things in a buddy’s boat a couple of months ago taking on water and we might still be out there but for me waterproofing my cell phone, being close enough to use it, and having a camp neighbor we didn’t know all that well dropping everything to come tow us in.

Some reports were they were fishing 8 miles from land. Some reports were a picture of the boat showed an antenna.

Chances are they did make mistakes. But at this point, they may have stopped at Walmart and picked up a vhf on the way to the ramp. We really don’t know.

Could have been as simple as going south away from a tiny squall that got huge on them. No telling.

They didnt necessarily screw up though. God occasionally reminds us that whether or not we make it in isnt solely our decision.

A ship at harbor is safe, but that isnt where ships are designed to be.

I'm amazed on the private boats taking plot courses from the USCG and running the lines... hundreds of boats.

I'd like to hope the Cajun Navy would do that in our waters, too.

Absolutely agree. That’s what I was trying to say. Just because someone doesn’t spend all the money to buy the latest and greatest safety equipment doesn’t mean they did something wrong.

The ocean is very unforgiving. We may never know how far they actually went out.

Some reports were it was their first time out, but that it was the one guy’s dad’s boat so one or both of them likely fished on it many times and knew the boat well.

I was just trying to say at this point 2 guys took a 24 Ft boat out and disappeared. We really don’t know much more then that.

Yep. Supposedly they were some salts.

I hate to hear it and read about it. If nothing else they convinced me to keep my boat in safe waters until I get a buoyant PLB. I thought my DSC radio and smarts were enough but by all accounts these guys were as experienced as I am.

Not to sound like a little bitch but this is why I don't go offshore. A friend of mine doesn't get it and gives me shite.

I'm a sole provider and it's mostly just me and the wife. My kids are little and need me. One day they will be big and I'll leave jettis and big lake (which can turn shite quick) and venture out.

RIP men
