I’m going with Brett Sweeny Thursday. Trey Prye is boatless but I’m bringing him as 2nd guide on our trip

I haven’t fished with Lee Warmke, but heard good things.

Brett Sweeney. I’ve fished with him and Lee. Both are great guides but I’ll be going every year with Brett now.

Lee Warmke at Halfbreed Guide Service will put you on big trout and loves to wade with artificials. Better than that, he’s a good guy who knows East Matagorda like the back of his hand.

How about Baffin Bay? Either one known for producing bigger trout than the other?

You can catch huge trout in EMB. You can catch huge trout in Baffin. I caught 28” fish the one time I was in Baffin. Biggest I’ve personally caught in EMB probably 26” 6#. I’ve been on the boat or wading with people that have caught 7#.

Just based on the STAR tourney, it seems biggest trout coming from south zone normally a whole pound bigger than the biggest from central region (EMB).

Less boats per sq mile the further south you go. Then it’s just miles of shallow grass and sand bays. It’s the perfect ecosystem for big trout.

Lower Coast has always had big trout, but EMB has been at the top for the last couple of years.

Baffin is such a unique place - I’d recommend going there if you ever get an opportunity.

Baffin. Our ranch is about 25 minutes from Baffin.

People rave about Baffin... It's THE place to be these days. I personally would be just as happy in East Matagorda.

I know a guy who just had a trip to Baffin. He fished with Chad Peterek and looks like they had a good trip. Jay Watkins and his son are also highly touted.

I'm sure there's a bunch more who are really good but those two guides seem to get the most hype. For good reason too.

Jay Watkins is a true legend and the best of the best. He is in Rockport though I believe.

Those Run-N-Gun Baws seems to catch some monster mule trout in Matagorda. Wouldn’t mind doing a blast and cast with them next year.

If you want your fish/ducks combined with other groups for photographs go right ahead.

I’ve done 4 duck hunts with them, first was good and they progressively got worse. Last and final hunt with them we got one bird. Why are you taking people’s money if you know you don’t have ducks.

I went wade fishing at Matagorda about a year ago and damn near got myself killed. Going with a guide is a wise call. I wish I had a recommendation.

Can y’all suggest the best time of year to go for big trout? I’m thinking April-May?

If you expand your range March to May that sounds right.

Lots of good info in this thread, most of the guys mentioned are friends, some more than others. For Matagorda, Brett Sweeny, Tommy Alexander, and Trey Prye are right up there as the best IMO. Early December is very hard to beat in Matagorda for big trout, and like clock work Brett is on them. Need to communicate with whoever you choose about your expectations prior to the trip, let them know your willing to sacrifice numbers for a shot at a real big trout that you plan to CPR. The redfish population is very good over there as well and if go with the thought of killing a big trout if you catch one you might have a day where you only catch a bunch of reds if you get my drift. Be prepared to wade fish exclusively which means you need to have quality gear to wear more than to fish with, they can put a good rod and reel in your hand to throw a corky with but if you don't have good layered clothes, a good wading jacket, and a good pair of non leaking waders you will get miserable pretty quick fishing on nasty days when the odds are tipped in your favor to catch a big one. Good luck.

Since it's been brought up IMO Port Mansfield is the place to go for big trout in the State, Baffin has been down a bit for big big fish(9lbs+)lately, it gets a lot of pressure, hoping the big storm that rolled through there and wiped out probably 60+% of the floaters this summer will improve the fishing this winter. Mansfield is further south and there isn't anything there at the end of the road so it doesn't see the pressure others bays do, lots of those big STAR trout come from there and ever further south toward Port Isabel. That is the reason Jay Watkins and his son Jay Ray go down there ever year and fish from Christmas to March, he always says you aren't going to shoot a 200" deer if you aren't where they live so if you want a ten pound trout go got to go where you have the best shot of catching one. We go to Mansfield for a week at a time a couple of different times in that time frame.
