Mangrove Snapper fishing techniques

I've managed to luck into a Mangrove while Red snapper fishing from time to time but we cannot ever seem to be able to chum them out of rigs, throw live shrimp with the hooks buried and catch them. We've tried this at several different rigs out of Fourchon in the Timbalier block anywhere from 11 miles out to 25 miles out.
We don't go much further than that since we fish out of a single motor bay boat. Caught a 9.92# Mangrove 10 miles out on Friday and of course our limits of red snapper but we want to be able to put mangroves in the boat as well since we're traveling all the way out there.
Any pointers? Just too small of a boat? Not far enough out?
Seems everytime we chunk shrimp anywhere near a rig the trash fish always eats them first.

You seem to have right technique. Get up current of rig and throw out some chum and see what comes out. I’ve found you got to get them in a frenzy and keep them there to really catch. Seems if don’t keep the school eating out from rig, it can be hard to get them going back again.

You say we need to go upcurrent, throw chum then quickly go downcurrent and fish?

for whatever reason, mangroves seem to be able to see any part of an exposed hook. be sure that the entire hook is buried whatever bait you are using.
hope this helps get some more meat into the boat.

What size leader are you using? Depending on the water clarity they may be seeing your leader and you might want to go smaller.
We typically use 20-30 Lb leader but have also gone as small as 15 if they are being shy.
Like others have said you really have to keep the chum going the whole time to get them worked up.

Doubt it. Are you freelining the cut pogies? You have to make sure you have enough slack in your line that the bait floats freely.

Me and some friend mangrove fish a lot. Those frickers are tricky and have duped us 2 weekends in a row.
Saw some hammers this weekend and watched them eat 10 pieces of chum but not touch my free lined piece. Hook was buried well, I thought.
They’re really tough in blue water, much more so than if you get into some green water where visibility is a little lower.
The biggest reason we can’t catch mangrove snapper is the MOTHER frickING RED SNAPPER. I swear man, you can hand feed mangroves all day and then out of nowhere the reds come from the deep and you’re screwed from then on. You’ll still catch mangroves here and there but you’ll be culling through a lot of reds.

The only time i have caught them my buddy had to downsize from 20# to 10# flouro to get them to take the bait. They sure are fun to catch when they eat the bait though.

last summer pictures but free line baits into the platform. Largest tackle you can get away with (20-30lb floro leaders). I use 60lb braid to not get popped off so much but 30lb also works. Move till you find them ready to eat. Sometimes they are more willing to bite than others. Sounds like you are on the right track

thanks for the pics and info. So, live shrimp shouldn't me used for the Mangroves?

sometimes they work, sometimes croakers work, sometimes chunks of bait work. Gotta figure them out.

The few times I've done good on them it was with live pogies which suck mega arse to try to keep alive.
Also did really good in key west on live hardtails with a huge net of dead pogies for a chum bag. It was a chartered trip and the guide knew his shite. I bet we had at least 50 pounds of chum in that bag with black hooks and flouro 20 lb leaders.

We chum cut up piggies into the rig and then free line live croakers or live shrimp

Same here. 40lb fluro leader, 3/0 circle hook, hook them and get them the frick away from the rig.

I actually do the opposite of what was said above. I fish the down current side and throw cut up pogies as far into the rig as I can and the fish will follow the chum back to the boat. To throw the pogie piece further I have this plastic kids bat that I cut the end off of. I put the chum in the bat then throw as far as I can.
Then I freeline live croakers on 4 feet of 30# fluro.
After I pick up 6-9 they typically get lockjaw. Then i'll go to a differenct side of the rig and try agai.
