What's the best setup for an all purpose, home defense rifle that can also function as a good hunting gun?

I love the idea of an LPVO, but the ones I've handled are like adding a brick on top of your rail compared to a red dot setup.

I have a Trijicon accupower 1-8x28 ffp with illuminated reticle.

I much prefer it to my red dots. But I have an astigmatism so the red dots are not a sharp image to me.

I am a fan of red dots. I have one on my CMMG 10mm and I can comfortably shoot 100 yards with red dot. Not the best in low light hunting situations but that a trade off. I have not tried the LOVO or a magnifier.

Go LPVO. Hunting (accuracy) will be difficult with a red dot at further distances. Red dots are meant to shed weight. If it’s a home defense gun or a lightweight build, go red dot.

I have a Vortex Sparq and a Strike eagle 1-6. The Sparq is really lightweight and I love it for that but when shooting the Strike Eagle, you will not notice the weight.

Not sure about home defense just because in my opinion the distance will be so close it will be more of point and shoot on my ar. But for hunting Leupold ar or the hogplex reticle 1.5x4 power just centers itself on game at low power and being able to crank it up to 4 for longer shots 75-200 yards is nice. I don’t think I would go Red dot if I thought I was going to shoot past 50-100

I would go LPVO if it’s all purpose. Find a place that has several in stock and compare the glass.

I’ve been thinking about the Leupold D-Evo with their holographic red dot combo. Wish I could demo one before buying. Looks like they are discontinued on most sites.

I have a magnifier with an EOTech and I never use it. The magnifier sits in its box on the shelf. If I were wanting magnification, I'd definitely go with the LPVO knowing what I know now. Those magnifiers are pretty cumbersome and between the magnifier and the sight, you're putting a lot of weight up there. The magnifiers feel strange when flipped out of the way for no magnification, too. If you're going to have the weight up on top anyway, might as well just go LPVO.

I absolutely LOVE my EOTech, don't get me wrong, but I've learned that trying to magnify it just doesn't work for me. I regret buying the magnifier with the mistaken idea that I could use it at distance and wish I'd spent that money on an LPVO instead.

Ultimately, my EOTech lives on my "you dun came too close and fricked up" rifle and I still need an LPVO for my "I'mma say hi from 400 yards" rifle. Had I not paid the $600 for the magnifier, I'd already have that LPVO on the rifle that I use at more than 100 yards.

I really like my eotech magnifier combo. I don’t find the magnifier when it’s not in place that cumbersome, and the sight/target acquisition with the eotech un magnified is basically unbeatable. Although I’ve never used a high quality LPVO, I definitely see the appeal and I’m sure it’s good too.

Compared to a red dot setup, yes. Compared to a red dot with a magnifier, you're probably better off with a LPVO if weight is driving your decision.

The truth is that either one is going to be a compromise if you want to use it for short and long range. If you just have one gun that you want to use as a do-all put a red dot on it and invest in a good QD scope mount for the scope of your choice. Swap them out when you want to go hunt or shoot at longer distances.

How about a prism?

You can get them in x1, x3 or x5 I think.

If you have eye issues they can correct for them. They are not variable so you are stuck at whatever you buy, but a x3 prism might be a good combination.

That solves the weight issue but you’re still stuck either using a x1 at distance or using a x3 up close if you’re trying to do everything with one optic. They are a good red dot alternative for people with astigmatism, though.
