Louisiana Red Snapper Season Closing Sunday

The private recreational Red Snapper season will close at 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 9 in Louisiana state and federal waters.
LA Creel estimates indicate that Louisiana is approaching the statewide quota, and we still have two weeks of fishing data outstanding. In an effort to ensure Louisiana does not exceed its quota, an emergency closure of the season is necessary at this time. LDWF will analyze outstanding LA Creel data to determine if any quota remains.
LDWF and the WLF Commission have historically managed the season to allow Red Snapper fishing opportunity during Labor Day weekend.
Assuming there is sufficient quota remaining after the outstanding landings are accounted for, LDWF intends to reopen prior to the Labor Day Holiday weekend to allow anglers to get out and catch Louisiana’s remaining allocation.
I still say they guesstimate these numbers at best.

They claim 25% of the annual quota was caught over the Fourth of July weekend (bullshite). Maybe giving a 5 fish limit was a bad idea. As is opening May 1 instead of Memorial Day.
This makes me irrationally mad, September is when we slay them. The people and the sharks disappear and more mangroves show up.

Said this last time we talked about snapper, would rather this than a 9 day season like before state took control. I think they re-count and find some quota for Labor Day weekend. Maybe not, but May 1 - August 9 was a pretty good run. I'm sure the state would love to hear everyones ideas on how to make the count more statisitcally accurate.

You cant really get more accurate unless you double the amount of money LDWF gets for more clerks
You guys really need to take a look at how other states along the Gulf coast are with their own state saltwater recreational monitoring programs

Just lower the commercial quota to zero and leave the season open year round for us rec peasants.
If the fish has a limit/season/conservation concerns, it shouldnt be sold commercially.

I agree, but just like the pogey boat issue, money talks. Until recreational fishing has a lobbying group that affects votes, politicians will always bow down to campaign funds.

There is a measure being brought up for a vote by the Atlantic Coast Fisheries Commission that if the recreational season is closed, so is the commercial season. Let’s see if their politicians are as easily bought as our Governor is.

They did say they hope to open for Labor Day weekend.
And this is better than when the Feds controlled it....BUT
I have a hard time believing this...There have been only a handful of days that any boats have made it out of Cameron. Its been rough and windy most of the summer over here.

From my buddy that fished with us yesterday that’s somewhat in the know, he thinks they will find enough pounds to open for Labor Day weekend. He used to work for WLF and it’s enlightening how they arrive at their estimates, inexact is being kind, yet, as mentioned, neighboring states are copying Louisiana’s approach.
We closed out the season with a flurry, went from only having 25 Beeliners in the box at 1:30 to our 16 snapper on top in very short order. One realizes how spoiled we are with spotlock trolling motors when it opts not to work. Our Captain had to work his arse off to hold us on a spot, we’d have limited on Beeliners with a trolling motor. Appreciate the dudes that rolled up on us in the middle of no where and parked on our spot when we’d drifted a couple hundred yards off.

No different than the 3 guys that rolled in on their big motor yesterday and watched me catch 25 then rolled out on big motor.
