No

2021-22 will see the largest number of non-renewals of duck leases ever in Louisiana.

Even the guys on the “wait lists” are saying thanks but no thanks.

Depends on what part of the state IMO as well as your goals (ability to hang at the camp entertain guests, fish after the hunt etc)

I have a lease in sela and SWLA. Sela rapidly is becoming a complete waste of time: good opening day and that’s it. Not worth it

Driving W from nola is a long but is worth it for me. But I value the camp atmosphere and all that comes with it. There seems to be generally some kind of ducks in SWLA. Maybe not mallards any more but teal and ring necks. Dos gris showed up too.

You can’t think of it as price per duck or goose. You will never come out ahead

But there is a price point where it worth it but to have to get to the boat rank at 3 am to find a spot or worse hunt a spot a day or two and get there before daylight only to see some boom scouter that heard you shouting beat you to the spot and shine a flashlight

I have duck hunted public all my life and it is just getting real bad If you are gonna look at empty skies might as well have a nice blind to sit in

Yeah... we used to Kill in the 500’s. This year in our blind, probably 150 and we had some bad shooting days lol

1988-89 says hold my beer.... this first year of 3/30 sent droves of people scurrying to deer hunting, bass fishing and other pursuits - many of those folks NEVER came back to duck hunting.

Many corporations completely dumped leases due to 30 day season and not being able to get enough hunts/hunters in to justify doing it. This actually led to the explosion of many smaller guiding operations and the kick and shoot operations.

case in point 1989 a friend of mine and i picked up HUGE leases in NO east that older relatives had tried to get in on for YEARS for 200 bucks.... the week before the season opened. for 3 years the leases on each side of us remained empty.. and in 92 we upgraded to the sweetest spot in the mix... for 75 dollars more

It is for me, for now. I like having my blinds I know I can go hunt whenever I have the time and have someone that wants to go. But I have a damned good deal partly due to my knowledge and experience(especially with habitat management and manipulation) oh. and my excellent camp personality. But, If my schedule allowed for 2-3 trips to other states each year.... then my LA hunts would be reduced to 5-6 public land hunts.

I like the other states 1. more ducks, 2. lakes don't sound like indianapolis 500 with people riding around looking for ducks and "rallying" them, 3. pheasants and more importantly 4 QUAIL....

I'm working with 2 guys right now that manage large deer leases on having access to their places Jan 31 through end of Feb for quail hunting after we have implemented some food plot changes that dramatically helped quail on their places(and turkeys). if that pans out and a few spots in La continue with increase in quail populations... oh and the california quail i was using as trainers seem to ben increasing their population near my house well if that works out... I'll go back to my first love..... wild quail(kick and shoots not even close).

I know too many people that paid 5-7 k this year and averaged less than 1 bird per person per hunt... I never thought we'd see that in LA...

even scarier it seemed like the birds we have youth hunt/veteran's hunt were the same birds we had yesterday.. Hopefully on next sunday's veteran's hunt we have new birds...

in the current environment, the answer is a resounding "NO"

I'm pretty much ready to give up my lease and spend the money paying for guided hunts a few times each season where I will have a better opportunity for birds.

Ive never had any other main reason to want to hunt. I just love hanging out with my friends, hell I like hanging out with non friends. I do like to kill stuff too. But if I had to choose one, it would be hanging out and not hunting versus hunting solo my whole life.

We only renew for the high fence fishing. They did much better to north of us this season. Last storm cleaned out the balance of our feed. But it was a little better than last year. Which was worst I've ever had in LA.

DHC?
Been on that list for 7-8 years now. Heard I was sub 100 about 2 years ago. Then, I heard they were letting people get out and not taking in any newbs this year.

Last 3 seasons: 10-12 Wax hunts, 130+ ducks
This year 7-8 hunts: 33 ducks.
Next year: out of state trip and gonna learn how to winter trout fish.

Gonna stick to deer lease, a few public land duck hunts, and hopefully find a good out of state duck outfitter.

I just want my 10yo to see why I love duck hunting. Now that he can finally shoot, no ducks. He’s already killed 4 deer so when I ask him to go hunting, I get, deer??? Or that other wasting of time shite you go do?

I was a kid duck hunting at this time, but even then with reduced limits, the hunting was never as bad as it is now.

Hell most days we scratched out our limits of 3, 6, or 9.

But today it is mostly 1 duck here or zero's. Talk about an "ouch"!

Not anywhere around Gueydan. Few birds and too much pressure

Find the right outfitters and you can make three or four out of state trips and kill plenty of good ducks and geese for what you are all in on a lease out there.

I, too, was in a blind in Whiteville for 5 years. I have been out of it for two years now, but because a new job relocated me further from Whiteville, making it only possible to hunt weekends, which wasn't worth it to me.

We were also paying $5k, split four ways (never had an issue with guests as we were all good friends, one of which only hunted the blind two weekends a year). We had similar results as Collins. Worse year, we killed about 50 or 60. Best year, we killed ~250 or so.

That being said, I'd gladly pay ~$3500 for a blind that was the distance that one was from me (45 minutes from house to parking for bike unloading) if it gave similar production. I really enjoyed it, even on mornings we only killed 2-3 ducks.

Unfortunately, while most blinds' production has gone down everywhere, the cost of those blinds have gone up.

I got fricked for the 2020 season because of the hurricane, but in 2021, I plan to do some boat hunting around my area, since I'm pretty sure there will never be anymore affordable blinds in southern Louisiana.

Take the money you spend on the lease, clothing, ammunition and divide by the number of ducks you kill. It that number seems reasonable for the enjoyment you've gotten then yes, it's worth it

If you are looking at any “hunting” in this perspective you are a fool. We aren’t collecting items. We are creating memories, hopefully setting examples for younger generations and bonding as human beings.

If you are only looking at a ducks to money ratio you might as well stop hunting.

Ours worked out to right at $278 per duck this year. Which was better than last year and the year before.

depends if it's what you like to do ! We also have the opportunity to fish- and our lease provides world class bass fishing. Also, we still are fortunate to kill ducks, granted, its mostly all ringnecks. Still very fun !
