most would be creepers will seek environs elsewhere when they hear a pump gun slide working....nary a shot needs to be fired....that sound is universally recognized and very good information to pass on to a would be thief or scoundrel meaning to do some dirt in your home

or maybe the creeper shoots thru a wall or window towards all the noise you just made chambering a round? I'd suggest you be locked and loaded before the creeper is close enough to hear you doing anything.

if its so effective as a deterrent, why would you need to fire a warning shot? And firing a "warning shot" is gonna make great fodder for the plaintiff's attorney when you are getting sued by the perp or his next of kin.
DA will probably look unfavorably on firing a warning shot as well.

Shoot or don't shoot. But don't use a gun as a message device.

If they are looking in a window one would presume they weren't in the house. I personally wouldn't kill someone looking in my window...because it is irresponsible to do so and could result in all manner of ill shite for the shooter not to mention the shootee.

I take your point about having a round chambered. To each his own....I personally do not trust safeties on a gun...I have seen 2 fail almost simultaneously in a boat blind within 10 minutes of one another...both verified by Browning and Remington respectively with some lame excuse about high humidity and near zero air temps. The only way I am keeping a gun with rounds in the chamber is if I am firing...I don't do it when hunting either...I keep the action open and chamber a round and fire...been doing it for years...takes some getting used to and it requires some extra cleaning but I was taught that the only safe configuration for a gun was when the action was visibly open. As such the warning sound is only a result of being prepared to pull the trigger...I wouldn't close the action or work the slide with the idea that I wasn't firing.....'cause I am....unless the perp is making a hasty retreat and then I would base the decision on the circumstances at the time....no sensible responsible gun owner fails to understand that when you reach for a loaded weapon that is locked and ready to fire that you have any intention other than shooting something....because you have chosen to escalate the situation and it is incumbent upon you at that point to be decisive and understand fully what your actions entail. You are correct...do not reach for a gun unless you are going to shoot something because bad shite can and does happen otherwise...

9mm, but don't use full metal jacket rounds for anything other than practice. They can go through the target into other rooms/houses/cars. Plus the self-defense ammo will mushroom into a larger head and create a lot more stopping shock.

Benelli Nova pump or Rem 870. And if you get into hunting shotguns are good for almost everything as long as you are close. <400$

Sounds like im in a similar position as Rex. Dont know much about guns but already own an AR15, an older Beretta semiauto shotgun for hunting, and a Glock 23 with a TLR-2. A buddy was telling me to get an AR 410 and use bird shot for home defense. This board recomends a Scorpion CZ but its more than i wanted to spend. Now i dont know what the hell to do

A 410 for home defense with bird shot is about the worse thing you could have. That's pretty bad advice. What's your budget?

Put a flashlight on this and load it up with soft points or specifically-marketed ammo for self defense. Then practice practice practice.

Buds had the beretta 1301 tactical on sale for $800 a few weeks ago. They sold out pretty quick but should be back in stock soon

IMO that's about as good as one can do for a home defense shotgun. As someone else said earlier, the shotgun is a universal tool. It is suitable for squirrels, birds, home defense, deer, and even defense against grizzly bears. If a man is only going to own one gun it should be a reliable 12 ga shotgun. Buy all different kinds of ammo and you're ready for anything, be it the company clay shoot or a bad guy at night or a boat trailer wire eating squirrel.

I'll go against conventional wisdom here, get a good semi auto shotgun. If you didnt grow up shooting a pump itll take you a long time to get reliable with it under stress. A semi auto with high powered ammo (buckshot for home defense) will very reliably cycle a 1301.

I was in your shoes until recently. I got a 9mm S&W and a 12 ga Winchester.

I actually think the pistol is better for my needs. I have it in a gun safe in my bedroom dresser, quickly and easily accessed via fingerprint or code.

The shotgun is less easy to keep safe from kids while simultaneously being easily accessible.

If you are at the point of pulling the trigger against a bad guy warnings are over. This is really bad advice. Gun fights don’t have timeouts. Shoot to kill or don’t shoot.

Yuck. Only gun I’ve regretted buying (subsequently lost in an unreported boating incident)
