re: Looking ahead to next season - Lessons Learned
We are about to start opening new roads and cleaning up existing overgrown trails. We have a few extra ladders that we will position so we can hunt prime areas with different winds.
Also, my son is going to plant about 3 acres of corn which he will sell and hopes to have some good early season feeding areas.

re: Looking ahead to next season - Lessons Learned
I had a horrible season. I honestly can say I spent more time in the woods this season than every before….. and saw exactly 4 deer. No shooters. Hunting public land has become a pain in the arse in SELA. The weather this year didn’t help. Saw a ton of deer moving at midnight every week. But dead in the morning. Made some evening hunts early and saw the deer I saw, but as soon as it got to November the traffic on the land had everything bedded down.

I don’t know what to do. I don’t have the time to invest in a lease, but I don’t have the time to travel around looking for better options on public. I love to hunt, and love my bow. Saddle hunting has opened up a whole new experience for me and made mobility so much easier.

This year is going to suck. I’ll be working thru the fall and doubt I get to do much if any hunting. But I guess we’ll see.

On the flip side, waterfowl was great. Did pretty good for teal season, and bagged my first Goose. That’s become my thing with my FiL, and it’s pretty awesome.

re: Looking ahead to next season - Lessons Learned
I hunt public land in South MS so our season runs mid Oct to mid Feb, with the rut in mid to late Jan. In years past, I would hunt hard from Nov-Jan and be burned out by the time the rut came. This yr I hunted a few time in Oct and once in Dec. Come mid Jan, I was good to go and was able to kill a buck last wk. So my lesson learned is don’t hunt so hard before the rut starts.

I also bought a saddle before the season but didn’t get enough practice in it to feel comfortable in the woods with everything. I want to practice more this off season climbing my sticks, shooting my bow from it, and repelling down. I’m looking forward to that.

Hunt in the marsh in St Charles Parish.

Saw a ton of does. Chose not to shoot any. Saw one solid 8 pt. Missed him at 200 yds. Next year will try to get into the cypress swamp, rather than staying in marsh.

Don't sit in any stand for more than 3 days...
You can come back to it in a week or so.
I'm scared to move because I see at least a dozen does every sit...but no Bucks.
If I move a bunch, I can catch Cruising Bucks more.
We're talking rut here because after Nov. 15th I'm gonna zero in on Hogs.
Their way more fun , Eat better , You can go at noon and hunt till dark'
Got 4 this year but 5 would be perfect.
Florida Boy here and our Rut is pretty much over by Nov. 15 th.
Plus in December they run dogs all around me and everything either hides or runs to private property.

Lesson learned- never let a buck walk the first day of your hunt, that you would shoot on the last day.

Why would you shoot it the last day. Seems if you decided that he could use another year, then that would stand throughout.

Sounds like you need to understand clearly whether you are putting meat in the freezer or securing another set of antlers to decide what to do with. I go meat first, if antlers show up, great. I already have a pile of skulls on top of a bookshelf in my office and I'm spilling over on top of the filing cabinet.

re: Looking ahead to next season - Lessons Learned
This is my first year hunting in Louisiana (previously lived and hunted in Ohio). I hunted public land and saw more deer, including bucks, this season than I did any other season. I saw several shooter bucks on multiple occasions and took my first buck this year.

But I need to figure out the late season patterns. I’m pretty sure I have early season and the rut patterns down in numerous areas by me, but I need to figure out the January movement. More time in the woods will do that for me.

I also learned that I need to be more selective on who I hunt with. Nothing worse than having the person you went with walk through your area 2 hours after getting there (because they didn’t see anything) or walk through your area 30 minutes before sunset to leave. I know the areas better now so I’ll just go alone.

re: Looking ahead to next season - Lessons Learned
Season ends Tuesday and I probably won’t be able to make another hunt. Shot my first buck ever after 4 years of hunting. My 7 year old also shot his first buck ever and we were together for both. That was awesome.

Things I am committing to do-

Setup early season archery options and actually hunt before November. Be more consistent in tending to my equipment - cameras and feeders run out of batteries or card space or corn way too often. I also need to acquire a quieter mode of movement. 4 wheeler will be kept for retrieving but I need to get a golf cart to be quieter around the lease. Mentally I’ve also got myself only wanting shot does about 2-3 weeks prior to the rut. So I’ll take a doe or two early season next year.

I am jumping into turkey hunting this year. Have done it on hunts out west with very good friends but this year I am trying to take down an eastern on the lease in addition to our yearly hunt. Pumped up to get out in the woods and do some scouting in the next 40 days or so.

Get a low temp, high CRI light for blood trailing. Several times this year folks lost blood and I was able to pick it back up and find deer with my lights. Now I can’t believe I ever trailed deer with those really blue LED lights, it’s incredible the difference when I have my old lights and new ones next to each other.

re: Looking ahead to next season - Lessons Learned
Grandbabies and weddings in the middle of the season kept me from spending as much time as I’d like. Thought I’d raised my two sons better than that. Still saw the most deer I’ve seen in over a decade.

Going to move some cameras around to scout some new areas, get off the food plots and deeper into the woods. Have shot bucks the last weekend of the season in back to back years, but they were both run ragged from chasing tail and lacking in the vittles department. Going to shoot at least one early season doe to take some pressure off. Finding a new place for my buddy and me to take our annual meat hunt in Texas where all the guides are on even footing and it’s not useless if you aren’t hunting with the lead guide or one of his relatives. Probably ISO Axis, hopefully some of the ranches offering hunts have recovered from the freeze that decimated the herd.

I intend to put out a new ladder stand or two, I’m too old for a climber and have trouble getting out of that comfortable chair in the box blind.

Will go back up in the next couple of weeks to load gravity feeders with protein to see if we can induce some better antlers and make more babies. That’ll give me time to take out a second mortgage to afford the feed.
