Welcome to the world of handguns, dawgsjlw!
The Ruger GP100 is a fine gun and the 357 Mag is a very useful round. I understand your thought process. Sounds like the 357 would start out being used recreationally. You keep talking about deciding between a 3" or 4" 357 barrel. My question to you---have you shot a short barreled 357? W/ full power loads, the 357 has a lot of muzzle blast and flash. The muzzle blast/flash gets worse as you shorten the barrel. You're not going to carry concealed a 3" GP100 because it's heavy- it weighs 36 oz, about the same as a steel 4" barreled 1911. Since a short bagel's not really needed for recreational shooting, I'd suggest getting a longer barrel like a 6" or possibly a 5". If you've not shot a 3" and 4" barreled 357 Magnum, please do so before spending your money on one. If you've shot the short barrels and still want one, go ahead and through down your money. In that situation, I'd get the 4".
The 9mm is a wonderful handgun self defense round. I think you'd be well served to have a striker fired mid-full sized 9mm like a Glock 17/19, S&W M&P, Springfield XD or comparable Walther/Sig guns. For the person willing to learn their more complicated manual of arms, a single action 1911 or DA/SA gun like the Beretta 92 or Sig are good choices. Since this is not for concealed carry you don't need a single stack or small double stack gun. Later, when you're ready for cc, buy a gun specifically for that purpose.

I recently purchased a Sig Sauer P320 XCarry. It’s my favorite gun to shoot. I love the flat trigger on it. Full size grip, 17 + 1

The xcarry will be my next firearm purchase.

I want to get the X 5 next since the X carry shoots so well. The X 5 is already making waves in competition shooting.

I've been shooting .357s for about 30 years. Here are my opinions. A four inch GP100 is an excellent choice. But I would not want the shorter three inch. It will be more difficult to shoot because of its shorter sight radius and weight. Give a six inch barrel serious thought. That's the length that really makes the .357 shine. More velocity, more sight radius, and more weight to soak up recoil. If you are going to use a platform like the GP100, you owe it to yourself to reload. Both .38 and .357 are very easy to reload, and you can make a wide spectrum of loads between the two. Also look at the S&W 686.

I think anything between a 4" and 6" is hard to beat. I guess it depends on what the main purpose is. If I was planning on shooting full power loads mostly, a 6" is definitely easier on the wrist and offers the best performance. On the other hand, I've always found a 4" 586 to be perfectly balanced in my hands and don't mind giving a little performance up for how well it handles. Either is a fine choice.

I have a P320 X5 and absolutely love the pistol! I’ve been shooting some competitions with it. It’s just a shooter!

quote:Thanks for the reply. And guys I did go ahead and pull the trigger on the GP100 357 with the 4.2 inch barrel. Also I plan on really shooting 38 specials and +p's out of it mostly(targets), so that is why I'm not too concerned with the recoil factor. I'll definitely shoot 357 mags out of it, but it won't be boxes at a time like it could be with the 38's.

I also figured my 9mm comment would ruffle some feathers but everyone around here has them and I would just like something else besides it. Also I plan on getting my dad a 9mm, so I can shoot his whenever I want (usually shoot at my dad's property anyways).

The price was $599 plus $8 for shipping. I also have a $35 transfer fee. I'm hoping I will get it in 4-5 days top, and I'll post some pics when it gets in and planning on shooting it this upcoming weekend.

Don't get the 3 inch. 4 inch was bad enough.
Check out the S&W M&P 2.0 Compact in 9mm. It's a fantastic alternative to the Glock 19 and cheaper.

Yep, I shot a 6" 686 with .357 and it was WAY more comfortable than my 4" GP100.
I wish Colt still made the Python.

Do you happen to live in the metro Atl area? There's a great place in Canton (Cherokee Guns and Pawn) that doesn't have a transfer fee and good prices on all kinds of goodies.

You plan on shooting 38s until you see that 357s are pretty much the same price and wayyyyyy more fun

quote:Well it isn't so much me but family memembers as the reason to shoot 38's. Maybe they will end up being able to tolerate the 357's but I'm assuming not so that is why I'll probably be shooting 38's in it. But yeah I most definitely plan on shooting some hot loads in it of 357.

I have a 686-1 in 6”. It’s the softest shooting gun I’ve ever shot. Love it. Barely feel .38s. .357s have more loud and flashy than real kick.

They arent bad in a gp100. Even the buffalo bore 180s are not that bad. I have a 3" Gp100 with pretty small hard grips (I carry it sometimes) and they're not that bad as far as recoil goes. It's a big heavy gun. They are atrociously loud though.
38's are nothing at all.

one of my daughter's favorite gun to shoot is my gp100 shooting low powder wadcutters.
She's almost 15 and has been shooting it since she was about 9.
