Moreland (1996) estimated the Louisiana deer herd at 1 million at its peak. According to the long term mail survey, harvest estimates peaked in 1997 at 267,600 deer. It then trended down until about 2012.* The minimum deer population estimate today is around 500,000"

There’s been a lot of deer habitat loss since peak deer numbers in La. Look at the subdivisions popping up on the outskirts of every city and town.

Interesting article that popped up in my FB feed this morning from qdma. While it’s not known how many for certain a buck will sire and survive just the low numbers that are stated as what they suppose were sired and survive surprised me

Bad analogy. If you shot the doe before being bred , it results in the same thing. 0 deer born from that doe.

Also where i hunt in south Louisiana, deer don't get bred until mid Jan, with 2nd rut around valentines day. It should absolutely be pushed back in that area. Especially when you still see spotted fawns in November.

Damn... That's true. And I hunt in SWLA and I also see spotted fawns in November. I would really like to see kind of a first and second split type set up similar to how they did ducks this year down here.

You need meat? Go kill something and eat it

Everyone needs to stop filling their freezers up and then throwing away freezer burnt meat the next year.

Said for years that we needed to go to 1 buck and 3 does. If you want to shoot meat, shoot a doe!

I agree. I kill a deer a year and it will last me and my wife throughout. Would just like to see something early season for rut and then something late season for cold weather/dependency on plots and food sources

2 lasted me and my wife 8 months last year. Im pretty sure we could easily eat 4 or 5 does/a few big bucks every year. A pack of ground meat doesn't stand a chance in my freezer.

Probably more due to some late breeding because of a screwed up sex ratio. SWLA has the earliest rut in the state.

There's a reason Areas 5 a d 6 are bucks only for the 1st 2 weeks of October while no other area has such regulations--because does still have fawns on them. The deer don't breed until January and even February in that area--a whole 5 months after most of the deer in SWLA have bred.

It's not that common in other parts of the state if the sex ratio is right. People need to shoot more does, but not because of antlers. It's because the herd is jacked up because people don't want to shoot does.

I wish the state would put out buck to doe ratios by Area so we could put the ridiculous "don't shoot does after the rut" argument to rest. If the buck to doe ratio is good, sure, that's a valid argument. But it's ridiculous if the ratio is heavily skewed to does.

There aren't that many of them in Louisiana, though.

I shot 6 or 7 deer (in 2 states) and around 20 hogs last year. Not a bit of the meat went to waste. The only meat I bought last year was chicken.

I've never seen any data to indicate that deer numbers in this state are declining.

I don't care what the state says I've seen it with my own eyes. I have less than 15 does on cameras at 3 different stands. In 20 yrs of hunting in Union parish I have never seen numbers this low.

I got in a club around Saline this year and there are way more deer down there than are on the club in Union parish.

I would love to see a shorten rifle season, antler restriction or lower tag numbers.

bullshite Union parish is loaded with them. I suspect the state is going to jack with the deer regulations because of the damage being done by these stupid bears. I think it's time for some redneck bear population control.

There's a few local areas where they're thick but there's only a couple thousand in the state. There's half a million deer.

How many acres between these 3 stands?
