Lab Lost to Alligator

As requested from the other thread. On May 31, 2015 I lost my HRCH/MH to an alligator 25 foot in front of me.
I was at my camp with only my dog, wife and kids were out of town. I was remodeling and working outside. She was outside with me milling around as usual. I hadn't had sight of her for 5 minuets or so, frankly this is where I went wrong. I was concentrating on what I was doing and had tunnel vision. She was 6 years old and had been to the camp hundreds of times, literally since the day she was six weeks old, she did not need constant supervision. I called for her with no answer. Second mistake, I didn't have a whistle. I started to worry so I got in my boat and rode around the corner, she heard me and came running.
She was 10 foot or so off the bank when the gator started after her. He grabbed her from the rear and she turned around to bite him back, then he pulled her under. I was right on top of them at this point and had one of those moments you see in the movies, everything was moving so fast but yet slow. A thousand thoughts ran through my mind. If I dove now I could get my arm around his neck and try to poke his eyes. Guessing he was in the 8 foot range I'd have to get ahold of his front leg full nelson style. What kind of shape would she be in? I'd be in the water with a pissed off 8 footer without anyone knowing where I am. His back legs would probably cut my thighs up pretty good. What if he caught my femoral artery? My wife and kids are out of town, no one would know to look for me for at least a day. All of that and more went through my head in a split second, crazy how the brain works.
I sat there bawling and yelling "NO" over and over...
I sat there for two hours waiting for him to come up. He never did.
That was the worst boat ride on my life.
She was a 40# ball of brains, personality and heart that every other dog now and in the future will be measured against. I don't tell the ridiculous retrieve stories anymore because people think I'm lying, no dog could do those things while sleeping in the bed with your kids. She was one hell of a dog.

man, this makes me sick to my stomach. can't imagine.
i love my dogs probably too much, but i'm not sure that i could jump in with a gator that size after them. (now that i have kids anyway)

Nope, can't even read this.
I'm almost as crazy about my lab as I am my kids.

Sad to hear! When an alligator gets to the point of taking someone's pet, it's time to terminate that gator. Praying for you brother!

This makes things very different as far as diving in. You did right by them by not being stupid. A dog, although very painful, can be replaced. A father can't. You made the right choice, don't have any regrets

I want to tear up just reading that. I had a very close call in fall 2018 with my dog in a canal close to the house. I checked like i always do before sending her and when she got to the middle and turned to come back the SOB came out of the weeds on the other side, about 8'. I went crazy. It slowly tailed her but she had plenty of distance between her and the gator to get back, i was contemplating whether i was going to jump on this thing. If i'd thrown the stick clean across she'd be gone.

Man sorry to hear. A buddy a few years back was duck hunting and a wounded duck was on a mudflat. He took his lab around in his go devil to the duck that was probably 300 yards from the blind. Buddy says the dog on the bow all of a sudden jumped in without warning and he ran over the dog. The mud was so thick that when he turned around he couldn’t find the dog. It was submerged in mud. He finally finds the dog and pulls him out and proceeds to do cpr on the dog and revived him. Hauls arse to the vet leaving everything behind. Dog was basically brain dead and my buddy was devastated. A field champion dog in his prime died. Goes back the next day to his lease and does a burial for his dog. Never hunted another day that year on his lease.

10 times out of 10, I’m diving in on that gator, That’s just me. But that’s a really sad story, and I’m sorry for your loss.

this. I would go completely blood drunk after this, and probably be checked into a mental hospital. Sorry OP... that sucks so incredibly bad

Now I'm depressed..... I have a 10 year old Boxer with cancer. Not sure how much time he has left. It will hurt like a SOB when the time comes. He's ok for now though.

We lost a border collie to a gator about 10 years ago. Sad day.

I’ve had nightmares of this happening to my labs in the past.
I’d never stop hunting that alligator.
