For knives that aren't particularly cheap, but still provide a lot of value, Benchmade Griptilian and Spyderco Delica 4 are up there. Interestingly enough, I don't own either but have bought them for others. It would be unusual for either choice to be the "wrong" pocketknife for a typical situation where one is needed/desired.
A little more upmarket, Benchmade 940 or Spyderco Para Military 2.
But it is literally a Renaissance of pocketknives the past few years - from $40 dollar max value knives all the way up to some very nice mid-techs and even custom knives - there are almost unlimited options depending on budget.

Second your vote on the Puma's. Gf has commented that they are like a clothing accessory to me. I have a number of stockmans with wood, stag and bone handles along with the bowies, white hunter, trail guide, etc. One of these days I'll have a garage sale like I did my guns. Or maybe not. I'm still kicking myself for selling my guns.

My favorite knife of all time. I've had mine for almost 30 years. I carry it almost every day.

Buck 110 for a folding knife. I have a 20 year old Gerber Multitool thats still my go to knife while fishing or working around the house. Ive carried that in the surf, on the boat, around the yard, dunked it for prolonged periods of timw while surf fishing and everything still works. No rust.

Lots of good suggestions so far, mostly folding. Since it's deer season and I'm partial to fixed blade knives for skinning, I'm going to suggest some fixed blade knives. In addition, all of these are inexpensive.
I really like the "Medium Hunter" knife from Kissing Crane. I've used it to skin squirrels, as well as deer (In fact I used it 3 days ago). It stays in my truck.
This is my favorite squirrel skinning knife, but it's a good knife to carry in the rear pocket, as well. It's sold by AG Russell as the "Woodswalker."
Last, two knives from Cold Steel. You'll find these usually in my truck, as well.
"Roach Belly" and "Canadian Belt Knife".

I use Knifeworks and their service is excellent. I would discourage folks from buying knives from Amazon because their inventory system is subject to counterfeits getting into the mix. Some of the knives mentioned in this thread are some of the most counterfeited knives on Earth.
So, choose one of the major U.S. online retailers (Knifeworks has a physical location right on the US 165 for those of you in Northeast Louisiana), like Blade HQ, Knife Center or Knifeworks as examples.
