I always fish with live shrimp, but more and more people are fishing with live croakers these days. Is it any harder to keep croakers alive than live shrimp?

I find them easier to keep alive than shrimp. A rounded livewell is better.

Keep the water cool and don’t mix bait.
Cheaper to cast net mullet, they need to stay cool also.
I don’t have a recirculation pump, bubbler only and keep bait alive all day.

I have a square livewell with a bubbler and have no problems keeping them alive. I do like to periodically pump in some water to the livewell through the day though.

If you are talking about right now, i agree croakers are more heat tolerant than shrimp. If you see a dead one toss him out, if you have an overflow livewell keep the water changing out.

I don't know if I'll agree that croakers are overall more hardy than shrimp, outside of the summer months shrimp will keep in wet moss for days.

This, bait will stay alive as long as you are circulating fresh water.

I was meeting my neighbor at the Fourchon Marina Saturday (my RV is at Bridge Side). Fourchon peeps have decided to quit dealing with croakers, no consistent supply and hard to keep alive apparently. So I put my 150 qt icechest (that was going anyway) in the back of my SUV, bought 100 croakers at Bridgeside, had Bozo pour me a couple of extra buckets of aerated water in the icechest and 30-35 minutes later, poured them into the livewell after we launched with zero aeration and no casualties. And a few hours later, 40 mangroves had regrets.

The frozen water bottles, especially in a static (bucket) livewell or transport situation, seem to make a big difference
