Rescuers are searching for a kayaker who capsized in Lake Pontchartrain near Metairie on Thursday morning, according to officials.
Petty Officer Sydney Phoenix of the U.S. Coast Guard said a man launched his kayak from the Bonnabel Boat Launch and capsized some 300 feet offshore about 9 a.m. A search for him began after someone notified the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Damn that sucks. I wouldn’t take a kayak in that lake.

I've seen a guy driving a Tacoma with two of those type kayaks through my neighborhood recently. He was always heading toward Bayou St. John and not Lake P. though. Hope they find the guy. Kayakers always wear PFDs. It doesn't sound good if they weren't able to find the guy immediately

Not one like that anyway, looks like a racing kind, low to the water. I’d go with a sit on top that can drain

Sounds like it may have been the same guy, other people in one of the kayak fishing groups I'm in saying it's an older white bald guy that usually paddles around Bayou St. John in it but never wears a PFD. Sad situation that sounds like it could have been preventable.

Saw a guy a few weeks ago in a kayak right around the 8 mile marker.

Just saw that the body was found. Apparently he was struggling before falling off the kayak according to witnesses.

Confirmed that they did not find him wearing a PFD, they did not find a PFD in his boat, or floating adrift. Still unsure of what caused him to be in distress. It always seems like the stories of kayakers that end up like this were ones not wearing PFD's. Not saying that could have prevented what happened, but i'm sure it could have helped.

I was walking at the lakefront this morning, and it was very rough due to a substantial rising tide. The man was not smart to be in the lake in those conditions especially without a PFD. God be with him.

Dammit. Tragic news for this to happen. Wear your damn life jackets in a kayak people. I used to think it wasn't needed. I changed my tune quickly when I had kids. It's just dumb to not use such a simple life saving device.

I am an older guy, and I have started to wear a PFD even while I am fishing. My sea legs and balance are not what they used to be. Everyone should always wear a PFD when a boat in underway.

quote:Why not? I've fished from my kayak in the lake around the Slidell bridges a few times and had no issue. You just have to pick your days around the wind forecast and I always wear an inflatable PFD just in case.
I wouldn’t take a kayak in that lake.
From what I saw on a kayak fishing FB group, the initial reports are that the victim may have had a medical emergency that caused him to go overboard...not conditions on the lake.

I was walking along the seawall this morning; it was not a light chop. You had large waves with short periods. He should not have been out there in those conditions.

Different guy than the Tacoma guy--he and I paddle from this same spot every now and then, but always with our PFDs on, and never alone. The lake is just bouncy and tricky. We think we've seen the guy who drowned before (based on the boat), but he kept to himself.
