This happened in my neck of the woods. The machete wielding thug had been released from custody just last month for threatening other hikers on a different portion of the trail. Will post updates as I get them. LINK

They caught Sovereign!!!!
ames Louis Jordan, 30, also known by his trail name of 'Sovereign,' is charged with criminal impersonation, possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a report from the Unicoi County Sheriff's Department.
The report also said other charges in Unicoi County against Jordan are pending and in other jurisdictions along the trail.

I hike 60 miles a year. Don’t carry. This guy was in the same section as me. Never had an issue. If I’m a female hiking alone then yea I’d carry. My neck knife is sufficient for me though. I’m not carrying that extra weight

so he went north on the trail and not south. I think they thought he was heading to unicoi county tn hiked that area a lot and there were more than a few creepy people from unicoi through mountain city up to Damascus

I don't think your neck knife would be much defense against a machete, but at least you're not completely defenseless.

I’ve wondered about this on long distance hikes. Some creepy folks out there

I packed one on a few trips. Don’t anymore.
I feel much safer in the woods than in town. Plus that’s a brick on my hip that is tough to keep dry.

For hiking, what do you carry and where do you carry it?
Compact frame?
Hip holster?

An extra 4-6 pounds for 15-25 miles a day would suck. I already do what I can to save ounces here and there.
I’m out on the trail in the Georgia/NC section at least once a month. In the bubble and when I haven’t seen anyone in 30 miles, never felt unsafe. This issue has been on white blaze since the first one. Guy with mental issues and on lots of drugs. I think he was selling some sort of dope as well to bubble hikers.

That’s sad. Out having a good time and some wacko pounces. I’d rather deal with grizzlies in Yellowstone. At least they just do what bears do.

is it legal to carry on the app trail? Thought it was illegal

Depends on the state you are in at the time and the type permit you have and reciprocity laws. Generally, though, once you cross over into 'Yankeeland" on the trail, you are going to encounter strict CC and open carry regulations.
