West Carroll Parish
54 degrees, clear, light SSE wind
Changed it up for the evening sit. I moved a two man ladder after the morning hunt and not nestled in a strip of hardwoods with cleared palmetto to the edge of a field in front of me and to my right. Behind me is a natural creek with crossings every 25/30 yards.
I dusted off my 20GA single shot H&R with the rifled barrel for the evening sit.

I'm hunting a food plot this afternoon looking for a doe with my .30-06. Been some very poor hunting lately for me. Hoping to turn it around tonight.

I’m with you. Dating back to January of last year I don’t think I’ve seen but two deer during a sit.

See them all the time on the way to the stand, by the camp etc lol

Really bad run of luck.

We just didn’t do spinner feeders with timers this season because we want them eating the food plots. Well the baws next to us with pallets of corn are probably (they are shooting) having all the success.

I hate corn.

I saw 2 young bucks this morning. One was just cruising behind some woods. Looked like a young 6/8 point. 20 minutes later I used my grunt call. Immediately had a deer grunt back at me a few times then took off running. I never saw the deer until it ran off. May have been bedded down in the thicket.

Left the lease to go chop down a Christmas tree with the family and drove back home. Be back in 2 weeks to raise hell!

My old man hasn’t hunted much the past 10 years or so, and didn’t feel like springing for a MS license so I told him to just come hunt with me. The hunt started with a family of squirrels in the stand that wouldn’t leave, followed by too many wasps on the wall to start off the morning hunt. Ended up sitting on the ground under the stand (that’s where all the old guys sit at this stand, so there’s a makeshift ground blind… I’m the only one who gets in the stand, it’s a little tough to get in and out of)

Had 10-12 deer in our lap/back pocket most of the morning with about a dozen turkeys, but no shots were given. I don’t think we’ve hunted together in over 25 years, it was pretty cool to do that again, especially on the ground like we used to. He made WAY more noise than I remember him making back then.

Walked through the woods looking at sign and places hunt like we did 20-25 years ago.

Had lunch at community grocery in Woodville.

This afternoon I sent him out solo in Louisiana while I cooked, it was good day.

Enjoy those days . I had my wife and both sons in the woods with me this afternoon. I’d give anything to have another visit with my dad. We buried him 14 years ago Wednesday. He taught my everything I know about hunting and life in general.

Absolutely. He hit 67 last week, I hope I, and my kids have another 20-30 left in him.

Doing away with baiting deer would make hunting so much better for everyone.

Oldest son and I went to the hunting camp. Morning started with pancakes, eggs, and bacon. First pack of hounds let out about 8:30. Back to the camp at noon for fresh fried venison, rice, gravy, greens, black eyed peas, and biscuits. Then hounds out again. To many of y’all’s disbelief, not a deer was shot at and not a single dog left our property. It was a nice cold beautiful day. My 6 year old and his cousins and friends had a blast playing in the woods. We had some good races and saw a few deer. The dogs did great for opening weekend. A great time was had by all.

We have pigs and feeding just attracts those bastards. Plus I don’t enjoy the box stand/feeder.

I’ve enjoyed the move to climbers and lock ons in the woods. Scouting areas and setting up on the out skirts. I found an area untouched on our lease and in the last 2 plus years have shot 6 deer from one area with zero feed.

Son and I went walk a different area, found trails, set up camera and I bow hunted it. Saw a deer that was within 10 yards that I let walk. Daughter and I scouted a nearby area and set my climber up. Shot a deer yesterday and saw 2 bucks today. No feed.

UPDATE: Had to wait until this evening for the dogs, but deer down and recovered.

172 pound 6 point. Deer was down 45 yards from where it was shot. It’s just so thick we needed the dogs to find it.

I’m late to the party, but I got a good one yesterday and a pretty good story to go along with it.

I’ll start by saying that I am fortunate enough to have had several nice bucks show up on my cams this year consistently. One in particular I named the Rock because he has a peculiar brow on his right side.

Noon yesterday nature was calling but there was a doe and fawn behind me in the woods. I finally couldn’t see them anymore by 12:30 so I slowly stood up and let it fly over the side of my stand. As soon as the last drop hit the ground, I saw antlers. An 8 point was walking downwind of my stand with the fresh puddle right under it. I only have time to put the horse in the barn, can’t even close the barn door.

He gets behind some brush thick enough for me to get my gun up to check him out in the scope. He’s a shooter.

While I’m watching him, I hear more steps from where he came. So I ease the scope in that direction and I see in a small window between trees, the people’s brow. He stood still for the next minute, but it seemed like an hour.

Propped against the tree and with only his neck in the scope, I touched the trigger and he dropped in his tracks. What a great day!
