Was honestly thinking about a water oak. Grow fast and straight, and hang onto their leaves relatively long. Acorns fall in a timely manner. I can deal with it, just not every single fricking day of the year

I also hate flowers. In my past two houses, I run them over with the mower first chance I get

Man what ever happened to manifest destiny and manly domination and Jeremiah Johnson and shite?

Dedicate your life to cutting down every one you see like I dedicate mine to smashing every cottonmouth I see with a good whopping stick. Take back what is yours.

I hear what you are saying. I've raped and pillaged all I can from that rainforest ( D-6 bulldozer and a 660 magnum stihl with 48" bar). I have harvested over 300 tons of lumber from there. But, those trees get a pass. Nope, nope, nope. you will never win that battle. You just have to learn to live with it.

I had one and don't recommend it. Here is Dan Gill from LSU Ag Center on the topic:

quote:

Oaks are not among the fastest-growing shade trees, but some species grow faster than others. The slower rate of growth has its benefits because it contributes to the strength of the wood and long life of these trees. The water oak, for instance, grows quite rapidly for an oak, but it is undesirable because it has relatively brittle wood that is prone to decay (they frequently blow over in high winds) and a short life expectancy of only around 60 years.

He goes on to give pros and cons of Live, Willow, Nuttall, and Shumard oaks. LINK

Salmon, just don't give them away. we tell our friends they can pick up from the front yard. when they do they realize how much work is involved from the pickup to having pecans to eat. The first year in the house I probably gave away 700 pounds at work, people just got them from a box or bag I brought in. Some complained they weren't pre-cracked. Last time I did that. We now sell them.

NO on popcorn trees. Pecans have catkins and falling limbs. Only one tree that's pleasant looking and not messy. Japanese maples. Only thing is they don't grow large ( that's a good thing) so you may have to plant several. Get your check book out. But they are worth it. LINK

When I think about water oaks I get seriously angry. You don't want one anywhere near your house if a hurricane comes in. They have poor roots for an oak and fall over easily. And older ones drop limbs all over the place. Growing fast just means that they get to be a pain in the arse more quickly. River birches aren't going to do serious damage to your house like a water oak will.

Yea those Water Oaks are house killers because they rot from the inside out and huge branches break off during storms and cause serious damage...

Plant you a black cherry tree or an ash and be done with it. There's a river birch outside our building that keeps the sidewalk covered with shite almost year round, cool looking tree and leaf but damned if you have one near a driveway.

Sawtooth grows faster and bushier and will actually hold leaves better than a water oak. Less acorns too if they aren't in a grove for cross pollination.

Hair comes with the hide bro. My first house was in the middle of an old cotton field in Bossier PH - i.e. no shade and a hot mofo in the summer. Now I blow leaves till July with a smile on my shaded face.
