The more I look at it, the more I realize, nothing about it looks like a cottonmouth.

I'd grab that snake with my bare hand I'm so sure it's a water snake

And what are you using for scale in the original picture? You can't say that snake is "too big" by just looking at that picture.

I'm comparing it to the fish...

I was just reading a website that said copperheads can get to 36 inches, bullshite, I would say the avg. copperhead is 16 inches long.

How do you know how big the fish is?

You've only ever seen 16 inch copperheads? You've lived a sheltered life. Ha ha. Kidding. I'm pretty sure I've never seen a small copperhead.

I'm a little torn, except the head looks angular to me. Also, it looks mean.

With the fish in there, all bets are off. The bands are wrong. It's too colorful for its size. It's too skinny for its length.

I was working in Gonzales, TX last spring and there were so many they had public service annoucements about copperheads being on the move for breeding season. We were seeing 2 to 10 a day on the roads. Most were 14 inches or less...

Biggest copperhead I ever saw was in the snake farm on hwy 190. It was over 2 feet, but it was being fed well and had been there a long time so I assumed it was big compared to the species avg.

I'm not claiming to be an expert.

I think the original snake in question is a yellowbellied cornback rattle moccasin head.

The fact remains that it's a GDCK, and it could kill every single one of us just by looking at us.

looks stocky like a cotton mouth. The body goes from fat to just a small tail, no tapering to a skinny tail.
I would treat it like a cotton mouth.

Observation #2:

Look at the color of the fish it's eating... clearly toxic waste or something is intensifying the coloration of the pond creatures in general.

Just theorizing...
