I'm looking to take my son for his 8th grade graduation on a Speck/Red charter. This would be mid to late May. I did this for my older son a couple years ago and we went to Venice. Venice is so dependent on what's going on with the River and typically in May we're dealing with a really high river. We weren't too happy with that trip so I'm looking for options that would be good for speck/red fishing that time of year. Any recommendations would be great! Thanks!

I say Venice...Actually I believe their address is Buras, but it was Cajun Fishing Adventures. Their place was really nice and the guides were cool, but the fishing just wasn't that great. Between the 4 of us we caught about 6 redfish. Didn't even try for trout. I'm not expecting anything to be automatic, but just assumed there may be other options that aren't so reliable on how the river is. Maybe I'm wrong, that's why I'm looking for advice. Thanks!

Travis Lovell in Dularge is great. I took my sons last summer after he was recommended on this board . We caught fish the entire time and he made sure the boys had fun. We will be going back this year.

Dularge is great.

I'd agree to look at the Dulac/Cocodrie area. Usually the safest bet when planning ahead. If we get some big rains in April its puts a lot of the coast out of commission with fresh water.

I will say its always a blast taking people catching bull reds in Calcasieu pass, though!

CFA is one of the better ones. Relate to Ryan what you are looking for and reasonable expectations.

Brandon Ballay might be an option to consider LINK - my niece’s husband. Second generation charter captain. Certainly if you have concerns of river/high water or question regarding it, contact him and inquire - he’s a straight shooter. My understanding he always puts people on fish and never lacks for clients.

Late May is probably my favorite time of year to trout fish. Limits are very easy AS LONG AS THE WEATHER COOPERATES! If the wind is up then you will likely be chasing reds in the marsh. Timbalier/terrebonne bay is the area least affected by a high river so plan accordingly. Travis Lovell is a super nice guy and I’m sure you would enjoy a trip with him.

Several years ago, I used cocodrie charters a few times with some clients. Always great results. Several people I know also used them with good results.

They have rooms you can spend the night in the get an early start or show up in the morning.

Hopefully the wind cooperates. I’ll be calling him soon to get one booked.

that time of year is great around dulac, golden meadow/point-au-chin, or grand isle areas.

a charter in any of those spots should net you ice chest full of nice trout and reds no matter what the river is doing

Travis is a great guy and so is Josh Ellender. Travis fishes out of Dularge and Josh fishes out of Cocodrie. We went with Josh late May last year and hammered 15-18” trout at the islands with a handful of bigger ones. He just a new black jack that is awesome too. Can’t go wrong with either guy.
