From Mansfield to Matty is my sweet spot, have a house in Rockport. I'll get you my contact info and if you do it and if you need any help in that stretch let me know. I'll buy you dinner and a beer or two when you come through Rockport.

Read Paddle To the Amazon but Don Starkell.

What you are doing is not a comparison but if you are interested in paddling adventures you will love it. Might get some pointers too.

I would plan on fishing and using that as a food source.
Sounds like a grand adventure. Make a long weekend trip as a test run and see what you think after that.

This shouldn't be an issue if you catch a slack tide, that gap is only a couple hundred yards wide.

I'd be more concerned about going out past the jetty's

Some of these questions are answered if you have ever done just one overnight trip in a kayak. Which you absolutely need to do, and yes kayak paddling shape is not the same as gym shape. You HAVE to go and do an overnight or at least a couple long days paddling 15-20 miles before you go on a long trip like that. It’s absolutely doable, but would be much better with a couple days in the kayak first.

Damn, I’m surprised by all the responses.

I’ve done kayak races of 110 and 340 miles. Finished in 50 and 63 hours

Holy shite that’s incredible

I’ve got a spot satellite tracker that I’ll mail you

Wow. I’ve got a lot of ducks to get in a row - in terms of gear and planning - before I could even consider following up on that in good faith but your generosity is very much appreciated.

I created an email - aggiekayak@protonmail.com - so we can make contact and discuss it further, and hopefully get some kayaking tips from you as well

Gonna take me awhile to go through the rest of the replies guys but I appreciate all the input immensely … gives me a lot more confidence that this isn’t as insane as my family and friends are saying.

Damn, y’all are too kind, hard to put into words … outdoor board baws are a different breed …

I definitely didn’t expect these kinds of responses. I expected people would tell me I’m a moron

Would love to be able to take you up on that offer cgrand … feel free to contact me at the e-mail listed above … definitely gonna have to keep the board updated with pics as I make the journey, if I can pull this off.

Thanks

There was an ER doc at Earl k long years ago that did a kayak trip from Mexico to Venice. He followed the coast the whole way. It was a pretty neat story and he was a hell of a nice attending. I can’t recall his name though? Maybe his last name started with a P? Any of you guys go through the earl and remember this guy?

Another one, good lord … yall are something else. I feel like I have to do it now, I owe it to the OB.

Feel free to contact me at the above email. I’m gonna sit down later tonight and come up with a more concrete plan as far as times, distances, campsites, planned stretches etc and come back with a proposed itinerary for y’all to critique / comment on.

Thanks so much y’all, if I can pull this off it will be a hell of an experience and the OB guidance / involvement will just add to the legacy.

camp is at 28°27'23.56"N 96°18'8.43"W.
you can probably just let yourself in LOL

theres a fresh water rain tank in the back with a shower so you can get hydrated and cleaned up, if the camp is locked theres a big screened porch you can sleep on

have fun!

Here’s what I’m thinking -

Day 1 - Rio Grande to just north of SPI (where the town is) Edwin King Atwood park area - 20 miles
2 - to Port Mansfield area - 25miles
3 - to north side of Laguna Madre - 20 Miles
4 - to just south of Baffin Bay - 25 miles
5 - to Mustang Island right off SPID (I have a place to stay/ restock) - 30 miles
6 - to Port A area - 20 miles
7 - to Rockport (hang out with TxWadingFool??) - 10 miles
8 - to San Antonio Bay - 20 miles
9 - to Port O’Connor (cgrand’s camp area?) - 20 miles
10 - to beach on Matagorda Bay - 15 miles
11 - to Matagorda - 15 miles
12 - to eastern edge of Matagorda bay - 20 miles
13 - to Freeport - 25 miles
14 - to Jaimaica Beach - 25 miles
15 - to Galveston - 15 miles

I know these distances aren’t perfect, doing best I can with Google Earth, also in NMs.

I’m confident I can do the distances with some preparation as a single day, it’s the consistent day after day that worries me.

I’ll try and update this with specific beaches / parks I plan to be at soon. Unfortunately finding a map of public Texas beach camping areas explicitly listed and not just some bloggers “top 5” has been somewhat difficult so it’ll take me longer to shake out w Google.

I lived in Corpus for a year and been fishing in the area half a dozen times but that’s the extent of my knowledge of the Texas coast. So if I’m missing something please chime in! I’m definitely more of a Lake person

looks good to me.
once you get into the bays i'm assuming you know you dont have to stay in the ICW channel...take the straight line path to your next destination. except when you get near the river at matagorda, you do need to watch the markers

also, if the weather is nice hug the bay side of the islands instead of the mainland shore. theres a TON on trash in the bays from recent storms.

if its a weekend when you get near pass cavallo you can go thru the pass to sunday island, there will be a party going on...

How do you locate camps when they come up for purchase out there?

I really am rooting for you but I keep thinking back to the areas where the ICW dumps into a bay.

Look the line between Cove Harbor (Rockport south) to Lamar. The ICW dumps into Aransas Bay. Aransas Bay had 3 foot swells Sunday morning, during an average, to below average wind.

I have a 14' Tarpon and wouldn't even consider attempting the stretch mentioned above.

But again, I am rooting for you and hope to read about your adventures.

the bays are always tricky
coming out of the ICW at Port O’Connor is another goofy spot. If you catch it wrong on the tide and the wind it will mess up your day. And that’s in a big boat

Careful planning is key and there are some back routes you can take

Edit: I’ve got a spot satellite tracker that I’ll mail you if you want a way to communicate in case of emergency and for people to track your progress. It’s not currently hooked up, but I’d think you could just get a 1 month subscription on it. You could mail it back once done.

I’m glad someone suggested a Spot Tracker or an EPIRB. Some sort of GPS safety device like this would be valuable.
