Looking good brother
I posted this before, several months ago … Follow this LINK about a 23 yr old I met who kayaked the entire Mississippi River from MN to the GOM. On day 72 I met Sam in Destrehan and hooked him up with some Cajun groceries. Sam used a QCC500x touring kayak paddling from 35-112 miles per day.

Well damn … that’s at least 10x the distance I’m going for Impressive.
Thanks for sharing that, following those day by day IG posts was enjoyable.

Alright so my short term plans with the kayak are to:
-paint it
-replace all the lines
-replace all the buckles
-replace all the eyes / mounts
-replace lines / wire for the rudder
-order and install a 1m^2 sail up front
-make sure the bulkheads are sealed
-make sure the hatches are as water tight as possible
-get / make a new seat
What am I missing?
It’s in pretty damn good condition and I haven’t even found a serious scratch or gouge that would be worth fixing the gel coat on and definitely don’t need to do any fiberglass repair.

why you painting it?
(that's not usually too common for a canoe-kayak in decent shape - more like a last ditch effort after extreme patching)
Could you get by with wet sanding 1000 grit (or buffing w/2000) and waxing top?
eta: if at all

Honestly just because I don’t like the color and I’m not really worried about reselling it. Also feel like a blue Kayak is way harder to spot if something should go wrong.

You’re definitely right about that, every video I’ve seen of someone painting a kayak was fixing up something that really needed the TLC.

I think so. Figure if I’m doing all that I might as well paint it though?

yes to planning and what if's and contingency planning - but no more impure thoughts
no 1 your going to roll - and no 2 if not your going to climb back on from an end and skinny up to the cockpit

Don’t paint it … polish and detail the F out of the gel coat with a marine carnuba wax. You want the kayak to reduce drag and glide effortlessly through the water.

Here’s some more helpful information. … When I met with Sam on his MS River kayak trip, I asked him what was the most important survival tool that was a must have. Sam confirmed a submersible VHF radio to communicate with larger vessels, tugboats, and the coast guard. Sam also used a waterproof solar pad to recharge his batteries during the night when camping

What am I missing?
Reflective tape or decals to put on your paddle to make yourself a lot more visible to passing boats in case you need to signal for help

Ordered my sail and VHF. Getting a paddle and non-shitty PFD tomorrow. Heading to the Lake LBJ / Colorado River on the 30th, will be out there for around a month. Will add pics to the thread and let y’all know how it goes when I do.

Solar panel notebook that recharges into a power bank, or directly into a cell phone. Sam went from his Goal Zero -> power bank -> then cell phone at night. Waterproof and used by hikers , campers, and kayakers all the time. Various sizes and models available based on your needs

If you're from Austin Town Lake's excellent for afternoons and after dark with the interstate lights.

Had a red QCC 700 kayak just like the one pictured. 18 feet long, made of Kevlar and only weighed about 40 pounds. So narrow it was like trying to ride on a PVC pipe. Good times…
