Because as I learned from this board, firearms don't need safeties. Keep your booger picker off the trigger is all the safety you need!

Saw a video once where a kid made a 1000 yd shot with a 243. I have a friend who routinely makes 300+ yd shots with a 243. Obviously it can be done. Is a 243 a "long range round"? The BC and SD of that little bullet says no, not to mention retained energy/velocity at 500 yds.

Did he have work done on the trigger?
that i'm not sure of, but i've heard thats typically remington's out when this happens

i guess the most dangerous time is when taking off the safety to remove a round from the chamber
i like that my winchester has a 3 mode safety for this
i've had my winchester for about 15 years and I wouldnt trade it for anything
270

I've had the misfire issue. I had adjusted the trigger and that was the problem.

It's what I shoot.
Gun sat in my closet all summer and most of the fall, took it to the range last weekend and put 3 bullets in a 1" group with no changes to anything.
very smooth bolt and really like the feel of the rifle.

How is a 7mag overkill? My sons .243 kills them just as dead. But to stay on topic I recommend .270 winchester because the ammo is more widely available at places like Bud's Quik-Sak just outside of Po-dunk Springs. I suggest you stick to the major brands and find a gun YOU like. Something a little as the placement of a safety or a magazine release could make a world of difference in how comfortable you are with a particular rifle. Don't rush the decision on the only rifle you'll ever buy. Good luck.

Not sure if you're serious about the 7mag overkill question, as you answered it yourself.
I'd you are serious, we can start with recoil and end with ammo cost. If recoil isn't a problem, why isn't your son shooting your 7mag? If money isn't a problem why are you posting here and not on the OT?

FTR, I suggest a 270win to the OP. It's my personal favorite deer round, so I have a biased opinion. I have zero argument against the 30-06 as it and the 270 win are near a wash.

i'm not saying that they are using it as an excuse, I'm just saying the blame is usually placed on the trigger modifications
but if a modified trigger (which a lot of people like to have done) makes the gun a much greater risk, then it should be well advertised when you buy that gun, rather than what is likely something you would see on a standard list of warnings and fine print
eta: i know the remington is a fine gun, and many law enforcement and military people stand by it, but there is obviously a chance of a problem when you have that gun, so buyer beware
like i said, i don't follow it, but I think the issue has been fixed by now

I thought democrat was a bannable offense. Wait, is it Canadian?

First mistake is only wanting to purchase one rifle. You should get a rifle you are comfortable with and in a few years get another. Repeat every four or five years.
Can't have to many.

Why yes, yes it does. Thanks a-hole! Remind me to buy you a beer at the next OB get together. Thanks BFF!
I recognized that I had the terms switched and made a correction.

I am pretty much sold on the .270 or .270 short mag, My question is, "What rifle would you buy (brand and model)? This will most probably be the only rifle I will ever purchase, so I want to make the right decision.
How often will you be hunting? Find something comfortable for you, and doesn't cost a fortune. Try a friends or borrow someones and take it to the range. My local gun shop has loaners they let you take to the range before you purchase.
