So you guys disapprove of killing rats, raccoons, opossums, coyotes, bears, etc? Those are killed and/ or hunted as pests all the time and not eaten.
I agree what this guy did with the email was idiotic.
But pretty much everything in Africa that is shot on these trophy hunts are either a nuisance or over abundant. We don’t have monkeys here so it’s foreign, but they very well could have been a huge nuisance where he was hunting.

Probably not, but it’s not because i would feel bad about it.
I would venture to guess, if you did you wouldn't post that pic on social media...

Bears are absolutely eaten! Raccoons sometimes as well

Aren’t baboons a nuisance over there?

Glad this guy had to resign.
Yep, this is me. Glad he had to resign.

Yeah, they are eaten and then everything else can be used as well. Rinellla talks about bears all the time on the MeatEater podcast.
Personally, I'm not ever going to hunt primates, or any other trophy game. That said, I see the merit in the process of hunting certain animals who have been identified as a nuisance or danger to the communities that they live around, and collecting the trophy fees for these hunts, provided those fees are used towards conservation efforts or other good causes within the community.

a man should lose his job because he shot a couple baboons?
that's absurd

No protein ever goes to waste in Africa, even the trophy animals are used to feed villagers. Word gets out fast as the entire village will join in. Within hours, or at most a couple of days, a dead elephant will be completely gone. The bones, hide, and hair are used to create artwork and leather goods which are then sold back to tourists. One trophy elephant can generate $50,000 - $75,000 which is split between the outfitter, government, trackers, guide, conservation, and villagers.
I'd have no problem shooting 1 old, male baboon that needed to be culled. The commissioner sealed his fate by shooting an entire baboon family and posting the distasteful picture that went viral. Big mature male baboons can weigh up to 125 lbs and the teeth are longer than a lion

I think too much emotion is brought into this case solely due to the fact they are primates. What does that matter? This guy didn't hop in a plane land in Africa and just start shooting... He went on a guided hunt obviously where(lets face it) the guide told him he could shoot those baboons. The argument based on the premise that this hunting was unethical is fallacious.

If he’s a stock broker? Nah.
But his job is to be the public and political face of hunting and fishing, and to manage the department. Not to mention hunting is fighting a PR war with people who think hunters just like to shoot shite and would love nothing more than to ban it outright.
Idaho Fish and game even discourages people in their regs from publicly posting images that are disrespectful towards animals taken. It’s not so much about him shooting few baboons, it’s about the attitude he displayed and how that may effect his ability to make decisions about the department he’s appointed to run.

High end trophy hunters pour thousands upon thousands of dollars into Africa that are used for wildlife conservation.

I'd shoot a rat in a heart beat. I never shoot coyotes or bobcats for some reason, I like watching them and I just leave them alone. Still have a shite ton of deer and turkeys where I hunt even with all the bobcats and coyotes, they gotta eat also. To me they are pretty animals. I don't shoot bears, I leave raccoons alone, and I'll only shoot a opossum if it's tearing up my yard, I shoot armadillos in my yard also, out in the woods hunting or scouting, I leave them all alone. Rats are disgusting.

Why would I get a downvote on this? It is the truth.
Wildlife conservation can’t be funded by Facebook likes and memes.

I didn't downvote you, but many people don't feel like it's always done on the up and up. Not like Africa has a sterling track record of integrity. He wrote a long email with all the pics and people quoted him as saying they gave him a price list and said shoot whatever you want. He shot the baboons because they were free, and he wanted his wife to see what the deal was, so he "shot a whole family and she got the idea".

Let's not act like he flew across the globe to help save the world. He wanted a picture more than he wanted to help the locals.

Honestly this guy sounds like just the kind of guy I wouldn't want on any lease I have anything to do with. He's a numbers guy...pure and simple. Not there for the true experience or the challenge. If he could have killed 100 baboons in one day he would have. No thanks and has no business being a fish and game commissioner anywhere.
