That's a monster!

If your lady can handle it, more power to her.

It's just bad for the OP's lady's first gun to be a snappy 380. She will think every gun shoots this way and it will deter her from wanting to shoot.

I say this at every opportunity - that Walther PPK I had was not snappy. It was a sweet shooting gun that forgave my mistakes in grip, stance and marksmanship fundamentals. Maybe I got a great one (and is the reason I no longer sell guns that I shoot well - which was a dumb practice in the first place and I did it twice), but as far as "snappiness" goes, my Glock 23 is snappier.

I believe you. But I'm not talking about a PPK. I'm talking about a polymer-framed, subcompact Taurus 380. A full metal 380 will have different handling characteristics. Personally, I've shot a PPK and the hammer bit the shite out of me. But to each his own.

Any 40 will be snappier.

What I'm saying is he should start her on a full sized 9mm or something else with low recoil impulse. But I wouldn't suggest 22 because I never suggest 22 for defensive purposes. Not because it can't take someone down, but because it is a less-reliable rimfire round when compared to centerfire.

Yeah, what happens is you kind of naturally hold it "low" (and I shot it more accurately that way), but the slide grabs that flap of skin and bites you - it got me the first couple of times I shot it. I found that, on the range, I could place her "high" in the hand, and let her ride down was better for keeping the skin out of the way. Never bit me after the first couple of times (unless I was careless with the grip).

Now that you say that, I've never fired a Beretta .40 - out of all the bad things I say about them (and I have and would carry one into battle), they aren't snappy. I just wonder if the .40 is as tame in a Beretta 92 package (not even sure if they give the .40 a different name)... Not enough to buy one, but I do wonder.

Like I said earlier, I'm really looking hard at getting a Sig P250 - Academy here also has a P226 in 9mm which I should just break down and get - but it's hard enough to get Garrison Commander to approve "another gun" purchase - especially so if the Academy receipt is going to say $900+.

Would this be a good buy?

If the gun is reliable, yes, it would be a good buy from a price standpoint. OTOH, I don't regularly recommend any pocket 380's for a woman's self defense handgun, especially a woman who's not a very experienced shooter. My objections to the pocket 380 as a woman's self defense gun are:
Smaller guns are generally harder to shoot than bigger guns.
Many women have problems manipulating the slide on semi-auto's; again, this is even worse w/ a really small semi-auto.
The pocket 380 is very small and light making it very snappy w/ a lot of muzzle flip. The women I've shot w/ do not like this.
Although I don't want to get shot w/ a 380, I think there are better self defense rounds, starting w/ the 38 Spec +p on the lower end. Which brings me to my final point.
If you already have a 38 Spec, you have a fine self defense handgun for her to start w/.

The price is low enough that you could prolly flip it and make some money. If you still want to buy the gun for her to use, try letting her shoot it first.

If you're set on .380, try Ruger LCP.
I have a brand new one and a box of bullets just waiting to be traded for something.

The Colt Mustang was recently re-introduced and offers another option for .380.

I have shot the Taurus(own it), the Ruger, and the S&W bodygaurd (own it). Both the Taurus and the Ruger were really snappy. The S&W she carries in her purse is a prett smooth shooting gun for a .380. My wife does shoot alot and likes to shoot all of my handguns from the .380 to my .357. She still like to carry the .380 because of how it fits in her purse. I know the caliber is small but I dont want to be the guy she shoots at with it after going to the range with her.

One (1) hit with .22LR is far superior to any number of misses with .357 magnum. Shot placement is the primary means to stop a gunfight in your favor. Every other factor is secondary to that.

For inexperienced females, an automatic is the wrong choice. Start her with a small frame .38 Wheel guns make sense to them...point, pull the trigger and the gun is "safe"

Those little guns are just hard to grip, have a terribly long trigger pull, and are usually quite snappy.

The wife had one & she hated it for these very reasons
