Looking at them at a gun counter and shooting them is totally different.

Glad you were able to take it out for a trial shoot before purchasing. What you thinking about getting now?

1.) When in an emergency situation and pulling the gun from your purse, you WILL forget to chamber a round. You will pull the trigger and nothing will happen. The gun is inherently unsafe to store with a round in the cahmber ready to fire.

It is HIGHLY advised to carry with a round chambered. Carrying without a round chambered renders the gun useless and adds a motion to your draw. Doing this adds things you will need to "think" about when you get a dump of adrenaline. All your body wants to do under stress is "react" not "think." This increases your chances for failure and there is no reason for it.

Now that you say that, I've never fired a Beretta .40 - out of all the bad things I say about them (and I have and would carry one into battle), they aren't snappy. I just wonder if the .40 is as tame in a Beretta 92 package (not even sure if they give the .40 a different name)... Not enough to buy one, but I do wonder.

I own a Beretta that was originally 9mm and I purchased a 40 upper for it to use also. It is my home defense gun, but with factory 40 ammo, it's not all that fun to shoot so I usually shoot it with my soft reloads and keep her stocked with JHPs for home defense. It has a very high bore axis which causes it to be snappy in 40 since the slide speed is increased. The only gun that is definitely fun to shoot in stock 40 form is the S&W M&P because it was designed around 40. Almost every other 40 on the market was designed around 9mm and then upsized for 40.

As for the OP, the smallest 9mm I suggest is the Kahr CM9. Although snappy, it is the easiest subcompact 9mm to control that I've found so far. I've even found its recoil impulse to be a bit less than a Shield. Here is mine after 3-4k rounds.

But, of the single stack subcompacts out there, the M&P Shield, Kahr CM9, and Springfield XDs are the best for the buck. All of these are good sizes for IWB carry, but I think a bit big for pocket carry unless carried in a jacket pocket. The best 380 on the market, if you choose to get one, is the Kahr CW380.

I have a brand new one and a box of bullets just waiting to be traded for something.
How much?

I'm tempted to buy one for my daughter but not sure.

EDIT: Nvr mind, I just read the end of the thread.

If I were to recommend a semi-auto, it would be a quality gun. One I'm willing to bet my life on to not frick up.

Davis? Taurus? Not so much.

Even if it's a cheap gun, why would a company risk such a liability? I think your fear is unfounded.

Carrying a gun with an unchambered round is like doing anal without lube, it just doesn't make since.

If you think you can draw quick enough to rack the slide, switch off the safety, and fire accurately you're completely delusional.

I almost bought one of those new for $195 from a sport shop and the sales person talked me out of it. They jam a lot from what he said. It's very rare that a SALES person talks you out of a gun but he knew my brother and said that they had a few returned.

Davis went out of business due to lawsuits for failure of their weapons.
