That’s a good combo too. My personal favorite is Shimano Calcutta 700 and tarpon rod

Ugly Stick Tiger rods are a good value. I like to use a spin cast, so a 6000 size reel on up to a 10000 with 25lbs of drag minimum.

Don’t you live in the Midwest? I’m just curious why you are buying? How much are they going to be used?
ETA: pretty hard to beat those Penn Battle 3 rod n reel combos for around $170 for a budget friendly snapper option imo

If you plan on mangrove snapper fishing i would recommend something with at least 25 lbs of drag.

And wear your running shoes so you can sprint to the back of the boat (ok, now the bow with the iPilot) and turn them away from the rig. Otherwise, they are gonna whip you.
I cannot recommend highly enough getting one of the larger Shimano Tekotas with the line counter. It is a game changer. Spool with (for me) high vis braid. 80# Flouro leader, 40, or even 30, for mangroves (spinning reel with braid here).

I live near Nashville.
I picked up a Key West 186cc that I’ve been taking down to Mexico Beach. I’ve mostly fished inshore to this point, but I’m headed down for 2 weeks in October to bump the reefs.

Thanks.
That seems like pretty universal advice so far.

Ya thats how we do it. My favorite set up right now is a a shimano baitrunner 8000 with some 80 lb braid down to whatever size leader they will eat. The live line feature is nice because you dont have to try and flip a bail while the fish is ripping out line. I should of got the 12k size for the extra drag though. 10-12# class fish will still break me off sometimes.

It helps, but you can just as easily count passes on the level wind, mark the line every 10' etc
You absolutely need to know the depth somehow.

For my striper trolling rigs, I use braid that has different colors every foot.
