I have had all of them.
I too had the opinion it was a glorified golf cart.... Until i drove one through very rough swamp.
The reality is:
Tight quarters: pioneer 500/520 on 28s. Rides like shite, go anywhere.
Tons of miles: pioneer 1000
Working off of it: ranger 1000 or mule profx
Dual: Rmax... Then everything else
Sport units: yxz was too fun, talon if dping stupod high mileage, rzr for everything else
I did not include canam products because they are either perfect or huge hunks of shite, and I cant being myself to ever buy another brp product.
Any of those buggies listed above will drive up an incline you can't walk up, tow at least double what they are rated for, and haul at least 50% more than what they are rated for.
We can debate reliability and comfort until the cows come in, but they all can be reliable with simple maintenance based on your usage.

have a 2014 Yamaha Viking. It's the loudest mofo there is probably, metal bed over the motor and who knows what else. It does everything I want to do, just freaking loudly in the cab. That is definetely not like a golf cart.
Just add a rubber bed mat.
Seriously.
Night and day.

I really want a new HD11 Crew but don’t want to spend the money. Wife gave me the green light gonna hold out to next year.
I bought two ranger crews this year.
Long story...
But, I love my northstar.

I’ve had zero issues with my 2018 model 1000-5 and I don’t take care of it.

That means you also likely run it hard. Oddly, that one is best if used hard. More RPM, more oil pressure. More oil pressure, happier clutches. More RPM, higher exhaust temps. Higher exhaust temps: cleaner plugs, cleaner cat, more complete burn, less fuel hitting the exhaust.
The 1000s do not like low rpm paw paw use nearly as much. Ironically, the belt drives in others don't either.
The only unit for the old paw paw doing 1-2 mph is the Viking. Or 2025+ pioneer 700s. But paw paw isn't gonna like how high those now rev before moving.

Actually yes we do run it kinda hard. Have roughly 10 miles of gravel roads we run around filling feeders and changing batteries on club.
It needs an oil change last year. I might get around to it over thanksgiving break. (probably won’t though)
My paw in law has a 2016 John Deere Gator that he uses and does not run hard and so far no issues with it either. He does take care of things more than I do though.

You're in luck... IT HOLDS TWO frickING GALLONS.
On mine I'd send samples off and get tested. I think the longest I went was close to 4k miles. Oil was still fine. But I NEVER went slow. Slow on those bikes is asking for clutch issues and fuel build up in the oil.

I’ll keep the “going slow is bad part” away from my kids ears! hahaha

In my research it seems like there is no longer a Honda pioneer 1000. Only the 500 and 700. Am I missing something?
There are several 1000's at my local dealer and my buddy just bought one in Ruston.

My wife recently bought our 1000. Love it. Sporty all rail trail riding with Fox adjustable shocks. Dump bed. Two jump seats that fold up in the bed. Great sound system
