LOL. If ever I'm in the need to kill a deer because I'm starving, putting corn out won't even be on the list of things of things I'll use to get that deer.

I assume you're killing your deer by hand or with a homemade spear?

And no climbers right? You just climb the limbs that God put out there already. High tech graphic camo or bare naked? Fact is, we're all using techniques that a previous generation would laugh at. Don't pretend that your
Way is the virtues way, because it's not.

I haven't shot a deer eating corn in 10+ years, but I still feed my does every year to make sure they stick around to attract big daddy

Eta - I'm really starting to hate the high and mighty in my old age.

I agree with OP. May as well use traps. This type of deer harvesting really should not be called hunting.
And the argument that those who think like this should hunt with spears doesn't equate.

It's called killing when you're hunting.

Someone "harvested" the corn I throw out for the deer.

I tend to agree but I think it is more about culling the population, no? Deer breed like fleas and can live anywhere....very adaptive animals....and young folks ain't hunting like they used to...so its either make it easier for those willing to "hunt" them or find an alternative means to keeping their numbers manageable. I have never done it and have not shot a deer in 20+ years but I don't think bad things of those who do it....its far better to cull numbers through hunting than any way I am aware of because it keeps hunter numbers up which means there are more of us to influence politicians. Drop deer hunter numbers substantially and duck and bird and other forms of hunting suddenly become far less manageable politically....

Do y'all think the earliest hunters sat around and argued about which spears are the best like we do about rifles? I'd like to think yes.

I bet they did...someone was better at making them and some would fit an individual better....some were probably also considered lucky. Interesting idea!

Snow geese are a good indication of bad management decisions....their numbers are off the chart and it is only a matter of time before they are decimated by a disease or a catastrophe on their over burdened breeding grounds. And they do a LOT of damage when migrating.....it is a bad situation and one that has been partially addressed by spring hunting, un plugged guns, no limits, electronic calling etc...and it hasn't really helped. It has made some land owners and outfitters some money but I have been told by both that the money is about equal to the damage the over population does. The thing that has not been allowed is hunting them over baited fields....because it is UNIVERSALLY frowned upon by waterfowl hunters....but it would make a helluva difference. Baited hunts on public land and on private....with some serious fines for shooting anything other than snows and blues....because there will be many, many, many ducks and dark geese present....

I wouldn't be proud of myself as a "hunter" were I to shoot 100 snows over a baited field but I would not be opposed to it as a short term conservation measure. Not many waterfowl hunters would be proud either but if it means getting the numbers down and allowing famers some relief from the degradation that results of over population and decreases the impact to other species on both the breeding grounds and wintering grounds many of us would partake. It ain't very sporting to use electronic calls and unplugged guns to shoot 100 of them either....but if something is not done they will crash and their numbers may never rebound. That'd be a shame....

Sitting in a shooting house overlooking a corn feeder isn’t hunting, baws.

Translation- I don’t have a place to hunt except some gar hole hole refuge I can’t kill shite on. I’m a jealous fig.

This absolutely isn’t true.
I’m in a 2,800 acre hunting club and have 200+ acres right out my back door.

How about sitting in a climate controlled shooting house looking down a well manicured cut looking at 6-8 bucks and having the "guide" scoring each deer eating corn and telling what the kill fee is for each one?

Pretty common nowadays and I just don't see the fun in it.

I don't have a problem with people doing it, but it's more akin to slaughtering your pig when it's big enough than it is to hunting, in my mind. Just not for me. I enjoy shooting doves, but I don't really think of it as hunting. It's just shooting.

If you have never shot mallards in thick timber that were coming to bait, you have no idea.

20 years ago when I was in college I listened to a guest presenter lay out the snow geese situation. His proposed solution was to go up to the arctic when the geese were molting and bulldoze 1/2 of them to knock the population back. I thought he was genius. I was the only one in the room that felt that way.
