Why exactly did you pick this particukar area? Old blind there?

Good questions, but regardless of the answer I wouldn't send my kid back out to that spot. Too many deranged, methed-out people in the woods these days. And even if OP is 100% right, the bad eggs won't care. Most of them have nothing to lose by messing with people or committing a crime.

I've never duck hunted on public land in LA, but years ago I was on a lease that bordered a chunk of a WMA. There was trouble out there every season. Dudes fighting over blinds, getting pissed and sky-busting each other, etc. Lots of folks out there weren't raised hunting and don't have any decency, common sense, or both. Not worth it.

OP: If public land is your only option, scout out some places off of the beaten bath. I've had good luck in flooded timber along river bottoms. The public areas I've hunted are mostly focused on deer and turkey in the spring, so there isn't much competition for ducks. I've only killed woodies and a few mallards, but that's good enough for me and it beats the hell out of hand-to-hand combat with crackheads.

Also: Don't make anything more permanent than a pirogue/kayak blind. I would never leave lumber or a legit structure on public land. Too visible and attracts attention.

Good luck.

The message that was left is 1000% not friendly. frick that dude. Go bait the shite out of it and let him hunt it opening weekend and call LWDF and tell them that he’s baiting. That’s how you really get the last laugh.
this I did this years ago when someone was hunting our blind on a lease whenever we weren't there. They go hammered, I called USFWS not LDWF though

Go and spray paint it flourescent orange and hang mirrors all over it and get the ole dewalt sawzalll out and mangle the crap out of it. I would call the dude as well before doing any of that but public is public...Tell the dude to frick off if he is an ahole over the phone...You get beat on public tough luck on to option B. Get up earlier and grind harder alot of dude think just because they have hunted the same area the last 5 years that the spot is theirs which is total B.S....Have had a few run ins with idiots out there over the years.

I wouldnt waste your time building a blind make a pop up blind with conduit or a scissor type blind for your boat and blend it in with natural cover before the hunt and then you can park and hunt anywhere. Blinds usually are not ideal for killing any decent big ducks on heavily hunted areas. Most stick out like a sore thumb and will only trick dumb ducks.

I called the number yesterday afternoon and this morning and didn’t get an answer either time I called.

My son and his buddy were riding around trying to find a spot near the refuge to build a blind and they came across an old blind. All that was standing was 4 corner posts with an old OSB plywood that we couldn’t even walk on without falling through. We added floor joists, framed the blind with 2x4’s, added hog wire around it, framed up to add a dog box.

The next day we worked at home and built a bench that would run the length of blind, a shelf that would run the length of the blind, a 3’ x 4’ platform (floor) to place on top of the the frame we made for the dog box, and made a ladder to attach to the dog box. We painted everything we built in camo colors. We went out yesterday with everything we built, along with additional lumber to replace the floor and build a lean off of the blind to conceal the boat.

I didn’t take any before and after pictures of the blind, but whoever did this added literally everything I mentioned above and even brushed the entire blind, so they did put in a lot of work also. It’s the note they left us that really burned my arse.

I think I’m just going to let it go and look elsewhere.

The lesson I'd take from that is that its usually best to hunt an area first with temporary options that way you see the game activity but also the local activity. My guess is someone was hunting that spot in previous years from a boat blind or something temporary and saw your additions and added to it.

As said the chances of this working out amicably is not good, but you never know and I wouldn't give up 100% until you actually do talk to them. It could be a father and son too. Who knows.

We rode around for quite a while yesterday looking around and we saw 2 other blinds in the vicinity. Other than that, we didn’t see any other blinds.

The problem with this is that you won't always be first. The other problem is if you are first the other guy can still get pissed, sit in his boat, and sky blast.

There's just easy situation. If you can't work it out over the phone which means giving in some on your own its usually best to just move on imo.

There’s your problem. It was an existing blind. I would call the guy and remove all the stuff you added to it and make another somewhere else. That guy is not going to be reasonable

I wouldn't mess with a man that thought OSB was a good choice for a duck blind floor. No telling what kid of things that uneducated psycho is capable of.

So what if this is the said owner of the old blind? You'd be pissed too if you got out there and someone built a blind on your blind

That’s probably not his number and he found whop head dolly’s number and put hers on it.

The Ob is calling this number as we speak.

This will be fun.

It's public land. Nobody owns shite. Can't be building blinds on public land if your expectations are that they are yours exclusively.
