For the fourth time random dogs have ruined my hunt. I’m almost positive they are coming from two neighboring homes but I’m not sure. It’s like they suddenly realized they like to chase deer and my land is a sweet spot. Don’t think talking to the neighbor would help. We’re country folk and no one’s dog is leashed around here. Know of any deterrents?

If someone was thinking about shooting my dogs, I would appreciate if they talked to me about the problem first.

But if I was planning on shooting someone's dog, I wouldn't say a word about it.

Personally, I would talk to them and hope they get them under control. It's not worth the hassle to get rid of them. How much damage do you really think they are causing?

Yeaaa I’m not shooting them. Just seeing if any one knew of any tricks to keep them off the land or at least get them to leave the area when I’m hunting.

I’ve been in this situation and thankfully this year I haven’t seen the neighbors Great Danes. We never spoke about it. I don’t want to kill a dog but we spend a lot of money to hunt. If it had continued I may have just handled it

Trap em
Let your neighbor know that you are having trouble with predators and are starting to put out foot traps, when you catch a dog take a picture and send to neighbor and ask them to go retrieve the dog as you don’t feel comfortable doing it, should get their attention

Odds are the deer are less bothered by the dogs than you are, if they’re around all the time. Nothing is going to deter dogs from coming to check out a corn pile they know has deer, squirrels, and coons coming to it. Something I posted in another thread:

quote:

Was taking care of my dad awhile and decided to go sit in a ground blind my brother had thrown behind their house, maybe 5-6 wooded acres surrounded by houses and yards. At 425 the neighbors Doberman comes barreling into the woods and runs all the squirrels eating the corn up the tree. Texted him a pic of the dog front feet on a tree barking and he just replied “they’ll be there at 430”. The dog stomps off and at 431 here come 7 does. After 15 mins the dog comes running back barking at them, out the right side of the blind I can see them half heartedly flag and trot about 40 yards, stop, and turn back to look. Soon as the dog left, they went right back to the corn and ate til dark.

If it's the neighbor's yard dogs we don't worry about them. I've shot deer 5 minutes after the dogs have come through. If you're seeing the dogs a lot the deer are as well and are used to them.

We have had instances where packs of feral dogs were around. We spoke to all the neighbors and game warden about it and ended up handling them quickly and humanely. Don't be the dildo who throws sponges or fish hooks out for them. That's psychopath behavior.

Had a random dog that started showing up regularly and messing with hunts. Other than that, it was a good dog.

I started feeding it, put a collar on it, kenneled it when we were hunting, but otherwise it turned into a very good yard dog.

Had it for about 6 months. Then one day I came home and the collar was on the front door handle.

I figure the real owners saw it lounging around the yard while I was gone and jumped the fence to get him. The message was sent though, if you let your dog run free, I may just keep it.

First dog thread of the season!

Once or twice is understandable. 4 times needs a consequence stated

A dog thief and a horse thief are two peas in the same pod. You know what happened to horse thieves, right?

I have watched this play out at our place many time s , the part (golden ret/chow mix) would come by and 5 mins later a deer would calmly walk having completely ignored their presence.

You need better reading comprehension skills. I literally said I wouldn’t shoot the dogs.

As far as the dogs. They aren’t running through the property. They’re actively chasing deer. They roam the area looking for deer to chase. One appears to be a golden doodle mix and two labs. They’ll trot through looking then about 45 mins later they come trotting back.

Wait, are you calling that guy a thief? That’s a bold accusation. Random dog with no collar shows up and he takes it in and cares for it. He’s a thief for doing so? Many strays end up being great family dogs. How was he supposed to know it was someone else’s dog? You suggesting that poster needs to be hung from a tree? Maybe my sarcasm meter is broken

Maybe catch them and put an ad on market place for some free deer dogs?
