Haven’t been hunting in years. Live in BR and would like to start hunting squirrels again in the fall. Suggestions?

Sure, that's one use. I wanna see a pelt hat once you really get going with it.

Find some hardwoods. Post up in a good location where you can shoot from.
Use a .22 preferably but a shotgun works if you just want to blast then. I use #4 shot so the bbs are easier to get out of the meat.
If you have oytside cats, they love raw squirrel meat.

Find you a nearby refuge or private land you have access too and even better if it has native pecans on it. Sit

You could /would be able to limit out pretty quick at any community park.

Don't get a .22. The rnge is too great. It might not be leagle. Get a shotgun, 20 ga on up, with hi powered 6's. Slip in 30 min before legal and start slow creeping

Memories, two guys I knew in Ellick got busted for hunting squirrels back in the eighties. One was hunting from a moving vehicle in city park and the other was tearing them up in the south traffic circle.
Find some hardwoods Baw.

Disagree. This was from this morning. .22 is way more fun and makes cleaning then eating, a lot nicer.

If you only have a shotgun, I’d use that.

I’d get a thermacell, off and look into public land near you - there’s a bit within an hour’s drive.
There is a spring squirrel season, I believe in May as well.

Squirrel hunting is a load of fun and not hard to get into…I don’t know why I don’t do it more often.
All you have to do is find some mixed forest…pines on the ridges and hardwoods in the bottoms. Hunt the bottoms where the hardwoods are. Walk very quietly and slowly through the woods (not more than a couple of steps every 15 seconds. When you are walking, look at the ground so you see anyplace they have been feeding and also so you don’t step on a snake.
On your pause between steps, be looking up at the trees (near and far). When you see sign of feeding, sit down near that tree for a bit. Squirrels have a short attention span and will move within 10 minutes or so.

There’s also a spring season, in May.
No locations to recommend. Not from that end.
If you’re not hunting fox squirrels, 12ga with high brass #6 and full choke.

Kent 3” #6 shot (12g). I use a Winchester SX4.
When creeping on a squirrel, move when it moves. Stop when it stops. Listen/watch for moving branches in the trees to spot their location (early season). Those tree rats are very alert and will see/hear you if you’re not moving quietly.
Late season, they’ll be lower in the trees and on the ground chasing each other.

.22 semi auto, a butt load of shells shooting at cans and stuff until you get pretty good and then find a river bottom, be quite, and have fun. I haven't done it YEARS but it is a blast...and a good way to get in the woods in the fall.
