Best snapper trip of my life, and I fished on boats with commercial licenses over 3 summers, was at night, tied to a platform with a couple hundred yards of rope out.

The captain/boat owner was drunk, fishing through the fish slip sitting on his arse at 3am. Me and another guy were sleeping. Hear a bunch of commotion and look out the cabin to see him struggling. Expected him to beat a shark with the bat, and he pulls in a huge snapper and says he was fishing just under the boat.

I think the limit was 6 then and we ended up with 18 snapper averaging 22 lbs with the largest being 28 lbs

Caught them all about 30 feet down.

i doubt you are even catching 12-15# fish. I have caught many 20+# fish and they are goddamn massive. Everytime i see someone with a pic saying a 20# fish when it looks like a 12-15# fish, i laugh. Fish stories everywhere.
Serious question, how big are these two drum

We caught them in dularge right in the pass last friday in less than 30 feet of water. Biggest drum I have personally ever seen but I am a freshwater fisherman

We caught them in a little 15 feet bass tracker with 10 lb mono and they dragged our little boat all over the pass

I've caught one hard tail ever. On accident too, we were trolling a grass line for dolphin and snagged one. I need to figure out how to catch more I've done a little reading on it. Doesn't see to be too much to it I assume you can also catch around rigs?

I’ve caught my biggest snapper 25-30 lbs free spooling with no to very little weight hooked up to the rig . Letting the current take the live mullet. Those big snapper almost would hit them on top water . Catching them on a TD 45 lever drag , sometimes you would barely feel the hit

Really Big Baits. The smaller snapper will be giving it a rap rap rap and then the big boy moves in on the action and your rod doubles over.

No matter the how deep of water you are fishing the larger sals feed higher in the water column. They are smart too.

Lighter leader, smaller circle hook (but strong), smaller weight all help to fool big finicky fish. A large live mullet or hardtail with a 1 ounce weight drifting naturally in the current is far more appealing to a 25lb fish than any other rig. I’m telling you, the biggest snapper are caught 20-30 feet down on any spot, any depth.

If you want to catch even smaller or illegal red snapper, or even no red snapper at all, the posters TunaTime and Tightlines can show you how to do that.

And Mr. Wonderful can recommend you a great charter to go on as thats the only way he ever catches any red snapper.

Just be careful using this light tackle over steel lol. If you are fishing anywhere there are Aj’s while trying to catch big snapper you are frocked.

But ya a true 25# red snapper is like a garbage can lid. It’s pretty damn big and wide. Most 10#ers people say are 20.

I rarely do it but wish I did more, but to truly target them well as others said chumming with lights at night and big live baits is great for big snapper.

Around rigs or drill ships. Usually up current. Buy some sabikis for smaller ones and throw a shad rig for bigger ones. Move the fast, they want something moving.
