Mainly curious... tried to buy a SBEII today and got delayed. Its been a while since i've tried to buy a gun, like probably 13-15 years. I can't remember if I got delayed or not back then.
I have nothing on my record and the company that i currently work for did as an extensive of a background check as you can do before they hire anyone and that was just a year ago. Just annoying...

Its not you, more than likely your name.

If you plan on buying guns you can apply for a pin number and you wont have to wait anymore.

Got delayed once at Jims. It would be damn near an hour away from home where I go probably 3 times a month. Frickers.

You passed that extensive background check, and you will likely pass the NICS check. It's just something came up that kept them from making a 2 minute decision on you.

I do all of my transfers using the NICS ezcheck system (online). Most of my clients come back instantaneously as 'proceed'. The one 'delay' I've had in the 2 months I have been doing it was for a guy who was a non-citizen.

As an FFL if I get a delay for a customer I have to wait until NICS calls and tells me it is OK...OR if I have heard anything back after 3 days I am free to release firearm to the customer. I guess in a effort to save time the NICS doesn't call to notify if it is OK, instead they let the 3 days run out. However, if you use the NICS ezcheck system you can see when the status changes to 'proceed', which in my one experience was in less than a day. Therefore I was able to get the firearm to the delayed customer after only 1 day. But anyway that's why there is a "3 day waiting period".

ol boy said I had to wait till the 14th? You saying the 3 day wait, made it click that it is 6 days. Why would he tell me I had to wait till then?

Business days? So, you have to wait 3 full business days?

It's up to the FFL really. He is required to 1.) wait until the NICS calls him and says it is OK to transfer the firearm(s) or 2.) wait 3 regular calendar days without hearing back from NICS.

If three days has passed and he has not heard back from the NICS he is clear to transfer the firearm. Now, say he transfers the firearm on day 3 then on day 10 the NICS calls and says don't do it. He just gives them your info and ATF goes and gets the gun from you.

Having said all of that, different FFLs have different policies. I bought from one once that had a 5 day delayed waiting period.

I see people ask about it pretty frequently on here, so it must be pretty common....

Pretty much hit all the main points.

Some people never get delayed, some people do all the time

One guy that buys from us has gotten delayed every single time he's bought a firearm. He will fill it out and leave bc he knows what's coming

Don't sweat if

I find when I run them on first time buyers I get delays or I have to hold for further review. Sometimes it is because they are just busy.
