Whether it be ducks, deer, or anything you kill more of than you eat, do you end up having to throw meat away after a year or two? I always feel like shite. I love killing ducks, I try to give away anything I can’t eat, but it’s not always easy to get rid of ducks. Do you throw it all in a gumbo and have a feast or what? I know so many people that kill entirely more than they’ll ever eat. Is there a good way to get rid of ducks without wasting them? I don’t believe, please correct me if I’m wrong, but I was told Hunters for Hungry only takes deer for the most part. I’d like to hear from some of you guys on how you juggle this.

I never throw away game meat. I can promise you that one way or another it’s gonna get eaten even if I have to grind it up and make duck or Deer or hog tacos it’s not going in the trash

If you can find a way to get sausage made out of ducks then yes, there is a good way. We found a processor in NE LA that does it but it takes a bunch of duck meat for him to switch gears and do it but up until this season we have never had an issue.

Get a pet pig. Feed it all leftovers. Once that dude gets big, slaughter, make bacon, hams, sausages. Repeat. No food goes to waste with a pig in backyard. Just don’t get attached.

This is why I asked. We were actually considering getting a pig for the kids to raise for slaughter. Thanks

Try not to kill more than you need. If you do, give it to someone in need.

You can make sausage or a big gumbo like you mentioned. Gumbo freezes great and it makes an easy meal.

Hunters for the hungry does clean out your freezer days every year though. It’s usually at the end of August. They will accept anything properly labeled and packaged. It’s perfect right before the season if you go through your freezer and want to get rid of anything you’re probably not going to cook.

Subtle brag I kill more than I can eat. I'm at 46 ducks this season, and I can eat that much by myself. It's gonna be a long off season, hope the stamps kick in.

Sounds like you kill for pleasure.
Other people would love a little higher duck population because they do enjoy eating what they hunt.

This. My wife didn’t grow up eating deer meat so she’s doesn’t really give it a shot when I grill it. I think she tried some when she was younger made by somebody that didn’t know what they were doing and it ruined her.

One deer lasts me a year, so I kill one deer and get it processed for myself and still may have some by the time I kill one the next year.

After I get my one processed, I give the rest away… Our farm is right next to one the fine towns of the delta. You start to collect acquaintances when you work around these little towns, and those acquaintances are always willing to take one off my hands.

I’ve known several guys that duck hunted but didn’t eat them. They would give them away to anyone that would take them.
I was the willing recipient of a good many duck over the years, wife andI liked them.Only ducks I ever killed were a few Wood Ducks now and then.

The worst was when I got into rabbit hunting.I would go with 2 or 3 guys and when we quit nobody wanted the rabbits so I would keep them all.Once we went to Crowley and killed 40 swamp rabbits and I got stuck with them all.I boned them out, mixed with Boston butts and made sausage.
We ate rabbits every way you can think of.
After awhile we didn’t want to eat them either.I hunted by myself a lot but I would only shoot one.I always found someone to give them to.

How old are your kids? If young, do you really think they'd want to see it slaughtered if they raised it like a pet, because I can almost guarantee one or more will get too attached to it to want to see it killed and eaten.

A co-worker did that with a pig.Caught a baby wild pig and brought it home.Kids named it,played with it,taught it tricks.
One Sat morning next year,he went out and shot it in the head and cleaned it.
Kids were crying, his wife was furious. He had to give the meat away.

We gave him major grief when he told us the story at work.I really don’t see how he did that, myself.

A good question. If you look around social media you are liable to see folks with a couple hundred or more snow geese stacked up. What in the hell do most of them do with all of those snow geese? They are not very good eating.

Who needs 5-6 Mallards a day 10 days a season? Seriously, I like eating mallards...I don't like it enough to eat 100 of them a year. if you are in an area where people hunt ducks a lot I imagine people who do not hunt also eat them but if youre not you cant give one away on a dare. This is why I no longer pass shoot at all and outside of woodies I will not shoot at a duck that has not at least swung to look at the decoys. If your only going 3-4 times a year stacking 'em is OK but if your hunting 30 times a year 1-2 a day on average is way more than we can consume.

We have these plastic bag deals we put ducks in, then insert them in a device that removes all the air from said bag and seals them. From there we move the bagged ducks to this chest type appliance that has an atmosphere that stays at a temperature that is constantly below freezing. So what we don't eat fresh during the season we can eat at other times throughout the year.
