Probably a good chunk of the summer considering the river is still rising, they're about to open the Morganza spillway for only the 3rd time ever, and there's still more rain falling on the midwest that'll need to make its way downstream.

River won’t be coming down in BR for several weeks, maybe a month plus so I’d think just about that long but I’m not sure.

28 day forecast has river above 44 ft in BR on Jun 21. Bonnet Carre usually closes when it get to around 41ft.

So maybe mid to late July.

This has to be the longest it has stayed opened correct? Saw an article last week were biologists were concerned that it was being opened twice in one yr. It's going to have everything fricked up until the winter.

What was their concern?

They claim there could be issues with algae blooms and damage to saltwater critters. Not sure anyone can assess the treat level.

There was a big marine mammal and fish die off recently that is being attributed to it.

We hear the river is above flood stage in various places but most aren't flooding - BR, NOLA etc.

is there a way to know when areas really start flooding? I know some areas aren't protected by the levees but nearly everything this far south is.

This is the longest the river has been above flood stage in history. I think back in 1927 was the longest prior.

early estimates were at least a month minimum but that was before all the new added flooding going on up north.

i wouldnt be suprised if its stays open until early july at this point.

until you start seeing news stories about things drying out up north and river levels falling, dont expect them to even think about closing it again
