I've been going to the range and can consistently hit fist sized groupings center target at 7 yards with my pistol, hand sized groupings at 10 yards, but I am putrid 20+ yards out. With my AR, standing I can hit hand sized groupings at 25 yards out, but haven't pushed it past that yet (I know, need to find an outdoor range, just tough out here in southern Charlotte for that).

I've also been running some obstacle style courses in both light, low light, and no light situations so I would feel comfortable at least engaging someone in my house, but I'm not consistently carrying my conceal carry gun because I know my current limitations around 20 yards out.

I know I'm not a good shooter, but just seeing how people define it so I know what to work towards, as well as any minimums people think a CC holder should actually be able to hit before consistently carrying (sorry test during the class was a joke).

Back when I was younger my dad could point-n-shoot a single action at about 10 yards, and he was a crack shot with an open sight rifle. I'd call him a good shooter back then.

Find a Uspsa match and go shoot it. You will find out how good of a shot you are.

A lot of people can shoot small groups when shooting slow.

I think a shooter becomes good when he can hit the target and follow up with another or 3 rapidly and engage another one quickly and hit it.

It’s kind of like the definition of porn vs art , you know it when you see it!!
I have seen some guys stack bullets at a range not hit a thing in the field. Some guys can hit clays but get so shook up when a bird or game is flushed they might as well throw rocks.
Time on the trigger and muscle memory from thousands of shots will get you there. People underestimate the benefits of shooting thousands of BBs out of a BB gun at everything that moves growing up as a kid, it wouldn’t hurt to add that in to your shooting.
As for the 20yd shot keep in mind that unless your in an open air shooter type of situation it’s going to be hard to claim you feared for your life at that range in most situations.
I’m a decent shot and I’m completely comfortable with my ability so I’m not going to spend more money training (class or 1000ks of rounds) to carry or hunt.
I would like to attend a long range shooting school and a pistol class at some point.

I'll say reaction times and ability to hit targets under duress make a "good shot".

I've always looked at it from the stance of killing what you aim at when shits hectic and happening fast. Not necessarily from a bench at the range (though that helps with familiarity)

I've shot skeet and hunted with guides and people who hunt way more than me with some fancy equipment and were able to outshoot them with my old Winchester pump dad gave me. I have nicer shotguns I just keep brining that one. It looks like shite. Cycles like butter.

It's all relative.

I would likely fail horribly at a shooting event that's not clays... but I've been able to being meat home and that's what I worry about.

Failsafe/mozambique drill...
Double tap center mass and ride the recoil up for a quick head shot. If you can do that around 2 sec at 25 yds, you're pretty good.

Just keep going to the range and you will become a good shooter. Like any other skill, it just takes practice.
I’ve hunted ducks since I could walk, and I’m still become a better shot in my 30’s.

As a kid it was jumping toad frogs with a Browning 380.

Closest to the x after dating a woman who shot 3d archery for fun. Had to exponentially step up my game.

I guess it depends on the context. Good for hunting vs plinking vs self defense vs competition (which probably translates closely to self defense).

I go to the range to plink. I don’t practice drills and I’ve never had formal training. So I suck. But it’s fun, and I suck less with some guns.

For semiautomatic pistols, my smooth trigger Caniks allow me to be decent at 10 yards (fist size groups ) if I take my time.

Shooting my S&W 686 Deluxe on single action, taking my time, then I can make tight groups at 15 yards. Esp with 38spl. Double action, not so much.

Most handgun engagements are within 10 feet and at night or low-light. Practice grip control, don't put too much finger on the trigger.and don't anticipate your shots. If you shoot left side target these are your tendencies whether you group or not. Good shooters are proficient at 25 yards but that doesn't mean you have to shoot tight groups. From 7 yards in you should have tight grouping if you practice. LEO qualifying rounds starts at 25 yds, then 15, then 7, then 4 yds.

Your question seems personal protection related vs hunting related. I’ll say that if you can get shots into center mass with a handgun rapidly at 20’ or less then you’ll be fine.

Its one of those things you know when you see.

A guy who can do what he needs to do with a gun is a good shot. What that means for a duck hunter vs a door kicker vs a PRS shooter are all very different things.

To quote the shootist - "trees don't shoot back"

Nor do ducks or deer.
