Denali would always lay on his side and cock his leg up for you to scratch his belly. When we put him down he did this exact thing. As the medicine began to work his leg slowly began to fall. That was tough to see

Had to put down my old man of 16 years a couple months ago.

My daughter, a vet did the deed. It hurt her even more then me We did it at home. It took a lot to get the balls for my daughter to do this bc she was the one that made Daddy take that dog in many years ago when I was just going to shoot it.

He did go peaceful.

I was about to leave work before I opened this thread. Now I have to wait for everyone else to leave so they don't see a grown man crying

Dogs were never meant to last our lifetimes. Be thankful of the good memories you have.
They are truly mans best friend.

I know you said that you weren't ready and wouldn't have another dog for awhile but I wouldn't shut down the idea. I went through this a few years ago when one of my two dogs got hit. It was just so quiet around the house and my wife and I were both moping around. I finally just said screw it we're going to look for new pups. We were able to go and look at dogs and talk about our dog that had been killed and it was therapeutic to do that. We found one that is best friends in the world with our other dog and they are inseparable.
I don't know if it was the quietness or the wanting to take care of something or even feeling like we were giving a dog a life they wouldn't have gotten otherwise but going and getting another dog was the best decision I made. Just something to consider.

Gentlemen thank you all. I let my wife read this thread and she's squealing and smiling at the same time. We are going to try the chiropractor route. Good news is when I got home from work this evening he peed on his own while I held him up and one of his rear legs was tense in moved a bit. By his is an improvement from being limp and me having to express his bladder. Just scared to get hopes up......

Hoping for the best OP. Nothing wrong with trying anything at this point. Any positive signs is good. Just love the sh!t out of them until the end and best of luck to everyone involved.

Kind of went thru that with my old man. He started with vertigo. After about a week and on a shite load of meds, he started getting around. Then after about three weeks, it hit him again. After my daughter checked him, she said he had a stroke which brought on the vertigo and there was no way of improvements for him. It was at that point he couldn't get up or eat. It was time.

If things go bad and the dog passes the best thing to do is to get another dog sooner rather than later.

It really does help.

One of the worst things in life is that dogs don't live as long as we do.

I've got the best one I ever had right now. It's gonna be a sad day when he goes.

Wish I could offer you words of advice ... But you certainly have my condolences. My pup is only 5 months old and I definitely looked at him differently tonight. I hope I never take him for granted, I've had him for such a short period of time yet I can't imagine life without him.

Keeping y'all in my thoughts.

This depressing thread needs to be anchored.

my wife's dachshund had the same problem. ruptured disc pinching the spinal cord, back half paralysis. we were broken up at the time, so I had no say so in the matter but she spent $3k on the surgery that was supposed to be a 50/50 proposition. 5 years later, he's 10 and he still walks around and runs just fine. he's got a slight limp and his back legs move kinda stiffly but he's good.

don't give up hope just yet.

I don't see how people take their dogs out back and put them down. Blowing off my dog's face isn't what I want my last memory of her to be

After reading this post I just hugged my dog and gave him a treat. He has no idea why but I think he's cool with it.
