How big of an area is needed for a duck pond?

I have some land that is in a flood plain that Is heavily wooded with a decent creek. I’m looking at either building a small pond or opening up an area near the creek.

Will corn be involved? Ice eaters? Heaters? Neon arrows?

Knee deep, Millett / Rice blend.
Get you some of them big plastic boxes that are on pallets with the metal cage. Put a 4” valve in the bottom. Strategically place them around pond. Fill half way with cut up sweet potatoes. Add sugar yeast and water to make a mash. When mash is ready get an impact drill with a mixing bit (like they use for paint or joint compound) mix up all sweet pototates till they break apart.
Attach 100 feet of hose to the valve at the bottom and run that hose to the middle of your pond. Open valve and mash runs into pond.
I HAVE NEVER DONE THAT BUT HEARD IT WORKS

Is that legal?
Actually it is legal. Unless you get caught.

Ducks don’t come south anymore. Build a fishing pond instead.

It doesn’t have to be that big as long as there is room to land but...Here in Ga you can’t touch cut down or harvest timber in wetlands. Not sure what your laws are. I bulldozed all of the button brush and left all cypress trees. It has made a huge impact on the hunting in my pond. It’s ~15 acres depending on how much rain we’ve had

Call the Lafayette Ducks Unlimited field office. Their waterfowl biologists will consult with you on it for free.
Edited to add: you may be able to call the Flyway Federation field office and talk to one of their waterfowl biologists too, but I've never tried.

I saw a group of redheads on a pond no bigger than 30 ft. wide in its biggest section just last week.
If you build one, just consider food, shelter, and overall habitat. If you were a duck, would you want to hang out there. All of that and yet still may never attract a duck. Fickle creatures

Do u have any other areas close by holding ducks? If so, u may not need as large an area

I would make sure to consult with a local who knows the laws about impounding waters and altering the landscape in a wetland in your area. There are likely specific things you can and cannot do. As someone previously mentioned, removing trees in a wetland is usually a big no-no.
That being said, you dont need a big area at all if the ducks already want to be there. Just openings big enough for them to land in really. If you're trying to attract ducks to a new area, then you'll want some open water and lots of food. In that case, i wouldn't go smaller than a half acre.

Only as big as Tony Soprano's swimming pool.

I’ll one up you, just get some tame ducks. Nothing attracts ducks better than more ducks.

I’m in south ga as well.
It’s not a swamp but the area floods one or twice a year. Thanks for the advice. I grew up in south Louisiana and could have duck hunted so many times and always wanted to deer hunt instead.
I went duck hunting for the first time this season and it’s all I’ve been able to think about. I’ve got food plots on my property that are set up for deer. None of them are in a flood plain area though.
