Mangroves are finicky and will steal your bait, not bite if they can see the hook, only hit live bait sometimes, etc
We used to chum the mangroves with bycatch from the trawl boats. When one would take a dump and leave a cloud in the water that was the spot to throw your hook. Hit it every time.

Too bad you didn't include additional boat ramps. I began offshore fishing/diving around 1980 between the two launch sites you mentioned.
I made a hobby out of finding fishing/diving spots other than the rigs. Most of what I found is oil field trash but the list includes 4 merchant ships sunk in WWII by u-boats and several reefs or rock sites that hold huge snapper. One reef is close in 45' of water and comes up to 12'. Although the snapper aren't as large as offshore it's nice to go to when rough.
The best part is the lack of fisherman in the area. On average I see three or four boats all summer.
Three tips always begin fishing on the SW rig in a multi rig field, fish the up current side of the rig and don't pass up the little four pile rigs.

This is my goal for this year. I'm tired of rig hopping even though we've had success doing it

Drive south out of either port until in 50+ feet of water and fish any platform. Mangroves will be more available shallower and ARS more prevalent the deeper you go but beyond 150 you will start to get AJs too. Red Snapper are the easiest fish to catch in any body of water that I have ever fished. The hard part is just getting out there. Every platform is loaded with them.

Because they are harder to catch, you can sometimes catch mangroves at close rigs.
Damn skippy on that, just chum the holy frick out of the water and they typically school up pretty good right below the surface. Then camo a hook with some dead chum. Sometimes it works wonders and might even draw up other species as well. This is usually our fall back after we catch our Snapper and if we can't find a weedline on the way back in.

can u catch snapper closer like tiger shoal area? Can u get them 30ft of water?
No tiger shoal is only 10ft deep. You can start catching them at smi 6 and smi 10 in about 70 feet. I never caught them closer. 131 vermillion has snapper at times. 65ft i think. But we always go to 100ft deep or more. Good luck.

Some of them are so infested with sharks that its nearly impossible to fish.

I can point everyone to some spots where you can catch a half red snapper on every drop. Endangered sharks chowing down on endangered red snapper, doesn’t get any better.

Cocodrie gonna be a run. Hit the artificial reefs in ship shoal. Start in the 200 block. Ldwf has coordinates posted

Coords for EI 119 in bottom left of pict. Those coords are just for the middle of the EI 119 block, not a specific reef or anything like that FYI.

Thank you for your spots. I appreciate it. In return, I will share a few of mine. Go SSW at roughly 216 degrees for 37 miles. This is where I went last year for many of my bigger snapper. There were not too many culls. But it was a little longer ride and more fuel. And if we had a moderate to strong SW wind it was not a fun ride. I have several good spots 17-19 miles out at a dead 180. You can catch a solid limit and will probably catch one or two in the 10-15# range. May catch a sure enough good one. In close due south gets a lot of pressure. But there are still some good fish there. The two biggest snapper I have ever had come on board were on rocks 55 miles out, and at a chicken cage only 12 miles out. I would say caught, but usually I just hold the wheel and try not to hit something. So, you can catch big ones in close. And then if you want to go SE, there are a lot of fish 22-24 miles out at 167 degrees. Better average than that 17-19 miles spots I gave you above.. But the average won’t be as good as the 37 mile spot.
