We are going to need closeups. Is that a register opening in the ceiling?

A vent? Lol.

Are you saying is that mildew/ mold?

That’s a normal looking vent with flex duct to me.

I'll assume that is an opening in your ceiling with the register removed.

Like others have said, flex duct and those spots you are seeing are likely just dust/dirt that made it past the filter on the return air, especially if the ductwork is a few years old.

If it is fungal growth, it is coming from condensation, you have gaps in the ducts allowing hot air and cold air to mix...

Looked like mold at first glance and it may be more or less but also seems kinda dry and stiff to the touch. I checked upstairs around the things and stuff and don’t see any signs of moisture, clogs or anything.

Just a typical dirty return air vent. Seen 1000 of them Filter was either not in it for some time, was left too long and air made its way around its edges for long periods of time, or was sized improperly. Needs cleaning probably all the way thru that duct. On a side note that is NOT black mold in any way shape or form. Once you've seen and been around it you can spot it or smell it when you open the door to the home.

Welcome to LA. People get all bent out of shape and scream about "MOLD!!!" in a house here. As I heard a PhD LSU Professor say one time, "show me a place in LA outside of a lab that doesn't have mold."

thats not unusual to see, its just dust buildup and dirt, possibly a little mildew as well.

where a dust mask and just use a stiff brush and clean it all off, then spray liberally with lysol to kill any mildew present and you are done.

do the same for the grills and spray them with rattle can spray paint for giving the vents a fresh brand new look

Not a return vent. Supply drop this isn’t a big deal

YOU have as all AC systems do an evap coil on your system. When the humidity is removed in the coil condensation builds and that's where the water draining outside the home comes from. Moisture with darkness plus flow of air equals fungi growth. It originates in the coil box air flow carries it through your system. It can be cleaned however be cautious as to who you hire. This service has been the focus of many allegations of poor business ethics.

It’s normal but preventable . It’s just dust that has built up over the years. You probably have leaky ductwork that is not properly sealed. Someone may be willing to try and clean it but if you want it done right you probably need to replace all ductwork and have it properly sealed.

Hopefully it’s all accessible and not in between floors
