That's how I go on my USP .45, doesn't take much practice before it becomes pretty intuitive. I don't handle that gun for months at a time now (fiancée's HD weapon right now) but I still don't have to think about dropping the mag out of it.

I looked at the Sig P320 but apparently they're having issues with the gun discharging if it's dropped or hit? Yikes.

It's been fixed. I could not replicate that with my p320 not matter how I dropped it from about 6 feet. I love the P320.

For the OP, I don't know of anyone that has said the VP9 or VP40 sucks or any other negative about it.

I do not have one yet, but I can assure you I will. I have an H&K USP .45 and love it.
I prefer the paddle mag release on it.

Should I start a thread for full size handgun recs or is there an old thread you can link or bump?

I went through your YouTube vids but didn't see one.

Carson listed a few good ones but I typically tell people to pick a reputable manufacturer and get the one that fits their hand. Generally there are two factions of handgun owners:

1. Shooters who will shoot thousands of rounds and push a handgun to its limits(maybe 5% of students I see)

2. Shooters who want a handgun for general defensive purposes and MAYBE shoot 100-300 rounds a year(about 95% of students I see)

For the 1st category I'd advise a list like Carson's while adding some others like CZ, FN, and Sig to the list. There may be some I'm forgetting but most of those are seen as the benchmark for reliability and toughness.

As far as the 2nd category, I think their target market is a bit larger. For example, the Ruger SR9 is a good pistol - not necessarily phenomenal but it's good. If the gun will only be shot maybe 100 times a year, that would be a decent gun to get. It may not survive 10k rounds like an M&P, Glock, or FN will but its not getting the snot shot out of it either.

EDIT: If you want a general list, here's a link to a bookmarked thread I did a while back.

Just got the SK, the other week. Still haven't shot it yet. But it feels great holding it.

I have a vp9 . it is an awesome gun. my only complaint would be that for its size, i wish it had more than 15 round capacity. if you're going to get one, i would reccomend the LE model. it comes with 3 mags and night sights

You get used to it very fast. I drop my trigger finger instead of using my thumb

This. I like it better than the thumb release, which often requires me to change my grip to reach it.
