Hidden cost of socialized medicine.

Buddy of mine just got back from Canada and was telling me all the guys who went bought a log of smokeless tobacco to carry to the guides. He said even the ones that didn’t dip were glad to get it because they knew people they could give it or trade it to. He said it sold for over $30 a can there.
When the government is paying for your health care sin taxes will go through the roof. I’m sure alcohol is the same way.
You guys that dip what would you say would be the cost per can that would make you quit?
I could not really believe it was that high so I googled it.

I love you dude but come on, this is America too
I dont dip anymore, but Ive had propositions to supply dip before. If you think Canada is expensive, you should try Middle East or Asia. I think its supply quality and demand regulating price rather than healthcare.

One of the guys said a 12 oz can of Stokers in the states cost him $11.50. He said that was about 340g which is taxed at $.17 per g. So that is roughly $58 in taxes on that $12 tub. If that is true that is the definition of a sin tax. He said the government wanted to get tobacco use down to 5% of population.
As far as demand regulating price I don’t think that low demand would equal high price that is not how markets work.

While we’re on the topic, have any of y’all had issues getting Skoal pouches in the classic straight flavor? A local distributor here isn’t carrrying it anymore. A couple gas stations I frequent have told me this and a little store in the building I work in told me the same. She said they were going to have to get it at Sams if they were going to carry it. Seems kind of odd. They only make it in straight, mint, and wintergreen.

Canadians are some beer drinking mofos
As a whole, Canadians spent $9.14 billion on beer in 2013 ($324 per adult), which equates to 2.27 billion litres of beer.
According to the Conference Board of Canada, one out of every 100 jobs in Canada is supported by the sale of beer, with every dollar we spend on beer generating $1.12 for the nation’s economy.

You act like this is a bad thing. I have buried too many friends and relatives from tobacco related diseases. Either make all drugs legal or tax the things until oblivion. Who the hell do you think pays for all lung cancer etc

As someone who smokes a few cigars a month, Tax away. Tobacco is a huge burden on the healthcare system.

Seriously my knee jerk reaction is exactly the same as yours, but when I think about it for a minute I have to say that’s the wrong attitude. The government should stay the hell out of everyone’s decisions on their own health. If I support or condone the government making tobacco $30 a can then I’d have no right to complain if they taxed beer so much it was $6 a beer at the grocery store. Alcohol causes health problems too, and you want to keep going down that road you can easily extend the reasoning to sugary or fatty or processed foods too.
I want to live in the land of the FREE.

Nothing is ever free. (even if you print money like us we still are 22 trillion in debt)
I say legalize everything. (can we all admit that the war on drugs is a failure) It is called freedom when the government is not choosing what you should or shouldn't do. They pass sin taxes under the pretense that you are going to make people healthier. In the end it just costs the citizens more and they have more money to waste. I am not a big fan of any type of government subsidized healthcare. If individuals were responsible for having to pay for themselves they would probably take care of themselves a little bit better. We are 22 trillion in the hole and I am not sure how much longer the welfare/warfare state can continue anyways.

quick thought...
do any of you think if America stopped smoking today that the cost of medical care and insurance would go down?...

Fat people eating too much costs far more than tobacco use, you gonna tax the buffet line next?
Trick is to avoid socialized medicine and adjust insurance costs at the individual level based on risk.
Tobacco users should pay more monthly for their coverage, along with heavy drinkers, those that test positive for drugs, etc.
The taxes you pay on tobacco don’t even go to covering costs in many states, they just get spent by dirtbag politicians on other BS projects.

Tobacco users have substantially higher private medical insurance costs. So it’s not simply a socialized medicine thing.
If you do something that causes increased risks to health problems, why would you not pay for it?

It went from "dipping can cause cancer" to "the numbers don't indicate any significant increase in cancer"
