Got a 14'long, 48" wide bateau my dad gave me cause he didn't use it anymore. Looking to put some 4 stroke power on it and I've stumbled across these two options that I'm seriously considering.

1999 Suzuki 9.9 hp 4 stroke, owner says it's "like new", asking $800

2004 Honda 20 hp 4 stroke, tilt & trim, tiller, but needs water pump. Asking $550

How much to replace water pump and would the 20 be too much for that boat in the first place?

Appreciate any feedback

Not sure if I would buy that old of a 4 stroke. 4 strokes are typically 10 year motors before corrosion etc. kicks in.
Very low hours aka "like new" is also worse than if the motor was used regularly.

If you go with the Suzuki, hook me up with the seller of the Honda. Go with the Suzuki.

I had a 25hp Honda on a 15'x48" bottom. A 9.9 would be slow. I guess it depends where you plan on using it.

Power trim is the shite. I'd go for the 20.

Definitely go with the Honda for that cheap. Water pump is easy to change but could be more wrong with that price.

This is your winner, assuming it's just a water pump. That boat will handle a 20 no prob and you'll be disappointed with a 9.9, the bold part is a big question though as that's a steal for that motor and I would be a little skeptical.

Go with the Honda. The impereller only is $10 but you can get the entire kit for $40 from boats.net.

If it is like any other outboard it is not bad to change. Look up a video on YouTube

Give me the seller's name, address and telephone number and I'll let you know if it was a good deal.

Personally I would go with the 20 on those two options, that would be after I had run a compression test on it. With a bad pump the compression test could clue you in on the condition of the cylinders.

My choice is to find a Johnson/Evinrude 25 two stroke motor and go with it.

Both are really good motors at good prices. The 9.9 won't give you much speed, but a damn good motor nonetheless.

Better be sure that no damage was done to the cylinders/pistons while the water pump/impeller was not functioning properly.

Thanks for the feedback guys, looks like I missed out on the 20 hp Honda, speed not critical as my 15 year old son will be using this mostly, gonna see if 9.9 Suzuki is available & try & lowball dude

if he says "it's like new" ask him for a warranty.

Honda, you can change the water pump on it in under an hour with basic tools for under $100. Also, you'll never want less engine and that Tilt and Trim will come in handy.
