We got out today for an afternoon hunt.

Saw a big herd and thought they were around 1000 yards. They turned out to be around half mile.

Just before dark we saw a really good buck that had huge hooks, but he didn’t let us shoot him either.

The tiny cacti are scary AF and everywhere.

Back in the mid-90's I went on a DYI handgun only antelope at a private ranch out of Wright, WY (looks to be about 40-50 mi due east of where you are). I had a really fun hunt. Killed a nice buck at 225 yds and a doe at 275 yards. Some of the other guys on the hunt used watering holes to ambush the antelopes. I used the spot and stalk method. Don't get in a rush. Use cover wisely and you can usually cut the distance so you have a more manageable shot. Use a rangefinder. Know your gun's trajectory. Anticipate where the herd's moving to. A bipod is handy. It can be difficult telling the difference from a "routine" buck (12-13") and a nice buck (>14"). Look for deep forks and white tips on the horns. It doesn't take a lot of gun I6mm and up) to put down an antelope as long as you put your shot in the chest. Once you spook a herd, you might as well give up on them as they're going to run a LOOOONG way. A herd will frequently have a couple days as look outs. At the time, doe tags were available over the counter for $25/tag. Two guys from WA drove their truck to the hunt w/ the cargo box full of ice chests. They killed 7 antelope before the hunt was over! I always intended to go back, but never did. Enjoy the hunt and keep us updated, including pictures.

You were actually pretty damn accurate on that guess then...

Good luck and share some pics!

Goldfinger, you better pull the trigger today. Major storm coming. Looks like it’ll be hell getting into our Elk unit near Steamboat for first rifle.

Got it done at 7:40 Sunday morning!

Saturday was rough with the constant rainy weather and mud. Made 2 stalks through slop and ended up staring at nice bucks 200 yards onto private land both times.

Sunday Morning I pulled off the road along a decent chunk of BLM/WY land. Hills ran parallel to the road so I climbed up and as I peaked over, I saw 4 antelope about a mile off leaving a pond. Quick check on OnX says they're public. Let's go!

I drop down and begin to make my way towards them. I peak over to check and don't see them. No big deal. I start to drop back and I see an antelope skylined 600yds from me on top of the highest hill. I freeze. We stare for 2 min or so and he trots off.

When I get around that big hill I spotted the skylined goat I see a couple antelope feeding in a valley. Un-alarmed. I close the distance while slowly checking their position. I got my spotting scope on them, watching 4 antelope when the whole herd comes into view. 15 does/fawns, 1 buck.

I crawled as far as I could without being spotting (shoutout to sitka w/ the built in knee and elbow pads)

I range various hill sides. 275, 330, etc.

They take the close hill/valley. I am looking down my score watching them one by one. They give me a full body view for a second or two. The buck was last. As soon as he steps into my crosshairs I squeeze off.

Instantly I thought I shot too fast. I bolted and looked back to see a white belly. The antelope didn't take a step.

ETA: deer has been tough. Lots of does. LOTS of great bucks on private. I am back in the hotel tonight as we are potentially getting 12" of snow in the next 24hrs

Never did post my goat from opening weekend in West Central WY. 3 of us got nice bucks with one being really wide, one really nice prongs, and mine being pretty heavy.

AirBnB rules didn’t specifically forbid antelope heads in the fridge and we got a good review so I guess we did a good enough job cleaning out the blood. That’s mine on the top shelf of the fridge.

I got one at around 4pm and my padnuh got one about 5:30.

Mine has pretty good hooks and a high, thick cutter. I spooked him at about 100yds. He finally stopped to look at my white flag at an unknown distance. I held about a foot over his back and squeezed. He went down in about 50 yards.
We ranged the shot at 355yds and there was a 25mph crosswind. Not bad for a baw who’d NEVER shot at ANYTHING over around 150yds.

We tore arse back to camp, packed up, and booked it down to Casper.
I’m now finishing up a ribeye and watching it snow.

I probably won’t be back as antelope hunting isn’t my style of hunting, but it was briefly exciting and the country is beautiful.

i need some insight on a deer unit if anyone is in a giving mood. I have 7 points. Trying to decide between a desert unit and something in the snowies.
