Ruger LC9s

For women not familiar with firearms, I am a firm believer in hammerless revolvers. Nothing to get caught in purses or waistbands. No safety or decocking mechanism to worry about if the gun is actually used in a traumatic incident. About as foolproof a tool as you can get.
(I fully realize you are limited on the number of rounds available, but the compromise is well worth it)

Unless she's planning to train and practice A LOT (which I'm guessing will not be the case), a .38sp revolver is a no brainer. I think some men want to make things way too complicate for the average female interested in just self-defense by introducing a semi.
Woman Dies After Failing to Learn How to Fight With Her Handgun
If it were my wife, I'd go with one of the following (in order of preference):
S&W 642/442 (readily available at most Academy Sports stores)
Taurus 850 (if you can find one--most likely online)
Ruger LCR
A few caveats:
The S&W has a smaller grip, so recoil may be felt more.
My wife tolerated a Taurus 85 well, with the exception of cold weather shooting. It has the benefit of a larger grip, possibly transferring some of the felt recoil. You also have the option of ultra-lite or steel.
Some don't care for the LCR's trigger. Ruger also makes the LCR in a .22 mag, which could be an option if .38 sp proves too much for your friend.

Ruger LC9s is great for conceal carry. Small, light, accurate and reliable.

I can offer some insight into these revolvers as I have kept a 642 (S&W 5 shot .38 special 1.75" barrel internal hammer double action only revolver) in my car for decades.
The only plus for this gun is conceal ability. Using a Uncle Mikes size 3 pocket holster, it can be dropped in any pants or shorts pocket without printing.
Recoil is significant with standard .38 loads and almost intolerable with +p loads.
The sight picture is so small with this short barrel revolver that I would not shoot at anything beyond 15 feet.
The trigger, being double action only, is abysmally long and hard.
That said, it is a damn fine gun to own.

I took a CCW class with a woman who had her range time with a Charter Arms Undercover Light. Our class was pretty small that week with only 5 students.
About a month later I saw her name pop up on a scary news story. Two armed thugs had kicked their door down. Beat the shite out of her husband. They raped her. They then were in the process of stealing all cash and jewelry from the home.
She offered them money from her purse, they ordered her to go and retrieve the money. She reached in her purse while the armed man stood in front of her. Boom! he was shot through the purse and dead before he hit the floor. The other armed thug made a move at her with his knife and he was dead before he reached her. Ended up with 5 bullet holes in her purse but killed those two mother frickers.
If she was using a semi auto pistol I'm not sure it would have cycled the rounds properly while inside her purse. Just good for thought.

Not it's intended use. It's not an aim-and-shoot gun. It's a belly buster. And perfect for a self-defense situation, which is likely to be up close and personal.

I took a beginner to the range. Gave her a glock 42. She hit the silhouette 21/25. Gave her my cute little hammerless .38 to shoot. Hit 2/12. All this was at seven yards. Trigger pull and recoil were much worse than glock.
You guys saying revolver are p.icking a gun that is dummy proofed but much harder for woman to hit perp.
And in the end, it is about hitting the perp.

Flashbang holster for ladies.
My wife can carry it unnoticed under a t-shirt. She doesn't have huge falsies either.

My wife used the S&W body guard 380 until she shot my full size Px4. She has the Sub now. The safety is much easier and faster to use on the beretta

Uh, Beretta Nano doesn't have a safety lever....

If she's familiar and accustomed to handguns I'd say Ruger LCR 38+p. I carry one when a bigger pistol is too much. Fits in my pocket and I forget it's there. Until I need it of course.

Have a lawyer on retainer / available to call 24/7 if you are going to carry a concealed weapon.

S&W air weight 38. I have one and you put in pocket and not pull your pants down.

I'm glad your lady found a good gun. But with the PX4, I would suggest you leave the safety off. It's meant to be carried condition 1 (chambered round, hammer down) since it's a DA/SA. If you add an extra step to the draw (turning the safety off) it will be forgotten under stress and her gun will be disabled.
And as others have said, train train train, and then train again.

My girlfriend has the P290 and loves it. The trigger is a little tight, but it is smooth. Fits her hand great and conceals nicely.

The 642 is perfect for up close and personal. ANYTHING Beyond 12 feet is going to probably get her killed. Unless she shoots every weekend
