You want something she is not going to be afraid to shoot and protect herself, if the situation comes up.

I have been interested in getting a Walther PK380 for my mom, since my dad just moved to lake charles and is only home on the weekends for the next year or so. It is an easy gun to shoot. It has a pretty comfortable grip, not to big for someone with smaller hands, and small enough to conceal. Also, it is really easy to rack the slide.

But the best advice, is to get something that she is comfortable with. Take her to the range often. The more she shoots, the more she comfortable/accurate she will be with it (which is true for everyone I guess)
