Because that's where I keep it when I'm driving. It isn't necessarily for protection. It's just there.

Not letting an officer know you have a loaded gun is a bad idea all the time.

If he gives a response like you got, fine. Who cares? Just tell him you have one.

You are allowed to have a loaded pistol in your car within reach without a CCW permit? Alabama gun laws are pretty favorable to gun owners for the most part but that is illegal as shite around here.

It's legal in Louisiana without a permit.

Louisiana RS 14:95.1

quote:

C. The provisions of this Section prohibiting the possession of firearms and carrying concealed weapons by persons who have been convicted of certain felonies shall not apply to any person who has not been convicted of any felony for a period of ten years from the date of completion of sentence, probation, parole, or suspension of sentence.

You said... "I'm not a conceal carry,yet."

Seems like you're at least thinking about it...

Regardless, I'm just wondering how it is you legally own a gun. Expungement?

Eta: I see your second followup. I didn't know there was a statute of limitations on certain felonies that expires, allowing you to own a firearm... That's cool.

Alabama the pistol must be unloaded in a locked compartment out of reach from anyone in the vehicle.

I've never outright told them, but I have handed over my GFL (Georgia) with my license and the cop looked it over, handed it back and said "thanks, but I won't need this."

Never asked me anything else about it. I've also had a couple of wrecks where I was not at fault (not that it matters) and I haven't mentioned it because it just didn't seem necessary at the time.

Why? Is it illegal? Should I tell him about the pocket knife in my console as well?

YEP.Don't even have to go back to the court of record and have them clear you. It's automatic.
Now getting around the Federal NICS database for purchasing a firearm from a dealer is different i think. I haven't tried it so i'm kind of up in the air about trying to purchase a firearm from a dealer because i would have to technically lie on the form they have you fill out.

Common sense and common courtesy. It avoids any chance of him seeing it and being surprised by it and it lets him handle it however he wants.

Routine traffic stops can be stressful for officers. Make it easy on them and it'll be easy on you. They're humans and contrary to popular belief, they're not out to get you

yep, any "NO" answers will get you turned down by many dealers before NICS is even contacted.

From the FBI NICS instruction manual for FFL dealers:

quote:

B. It is the responsibility of the FFL to review questions 11(a)-11(l) on the ATF Form 4473 to determine whether the NICS check should be initiated.

1. If the customer answered “no” to question 11(a), the FFL should not initiate the NICS check and the gun cannot be transferred.

2. If the customer answered “yes” to any of the questions 11(b)-11(k), the FFL should not initiate a NICS check and the gun cannot be transferred.

It depends on the nature of your offense, but I'd guess (strictly a guess, since I don't know what you were convicted of, and what the sentencing range would be) that you probably won't be able to get a permit. As you mentioned, you have similar issues related to a NICS check.

As far as volunteering info about a gun in the car -- it depends. Some cops are cool with it, and some are paranoid about it.

If asked by a LEO about a gun in the car, I tell them.

In Louisiana I usually offer my CHP when asked for my DL -- definitely would do so if instructed to get out of the vehicle, because at that point I'd be carrying concealed.

You should just let him search your vehicle while you are at it. Would probably make him more comfortable.

the link i provided to the Louisiana Legislatures website clearly stated that i can get a Concealed Carry permit. I was not convicted of any of the enumerated violent offenses and it's been 2 decades

I don't volunteer a bunch of information to police during a routine traffic stop. I rarely get stopped but if I do I try to at least audio record the encounter.

BTW, how many of you answer the question: 'Do you know why I pulled you over?'
