You pull someone over for speeding, pull him over and he exits his vehicle

You're then sternly told to get back in your vehicle and wait for further instruction.

Cause he'd wonder how a canoodian baboon learned to drive, and for sure, why would he have a gun??

You don't.

While you're in your car, you're not engaged in concealed carry (any more than you would be in your home). BUT, once you step out of the car, you are engaged in concealed carry.

So if the LEO tells you to "step out of the vehicle," you're required to tell him.

Having said all that, not all cops are as educated in our CCW rules and statutes as we'd like for them to be. So you may find that he doesn't appreciate being told "at the last second" that you're armed.

It typically won't cause you a problem to tell him when he pulls you over. And if he asks about weapons in the car, don't lie. Either tell him about your weapon(s) or say nothing. Things can go "south" in a hurry when you get caught lying to cops.

Lots of folks hand over their CCW permit along with their driver's license. I do this, as a tacit way of letting the LEO know that I'm probably armed, but that I'm one of the "good guys." I've yet to encounter a cop who seemed threatened or bothered by this type of "notofication."

Very few people have reported problems with this approach - but understand that occasionally you'll encounter a cop who freaks out when you mention the word "gun."

If you're gonna verbally volunteer info telling the cop that you have a weapon, I'd suggest phrasing your statement along these lines: "Sir/ma'am, I have a concealed handgun permit and have a handgun on my person. What would you like for me to do with it?"

I would not just blurt out, "I have a gun." To some that might sound a bit more threatening or disconcerting.

Just my $.02 worth.

When I get pulled over, I tell them my paperwork is in my glove box and I have a loaded gun in there. They ask me to get out and they get it themselves.

Basically the same thing happened to me one time up in Jonesboro area. Got pulled over late one night. He asked for my stuff, and I told him it was in the console, but my 1911 was on the floorboard right in front. He got the gun, attempted to render it safe ( ) and then I got my paperwork. He appreciated it, and no ticket.

While he was fiddling with the gun, I asked him if he wanted me to unload it for him.

Still not a CCP holder. LSP has fricked up my paper work twice.

My pistol rides next to me in the jeep between the pbrake and shifter when I'm in Louisiana. In Texas, it rides under my seat or inside the center console if I have the doors off. I don't get pulled over because I don't break traffic laws. I honestly don't know what I would tell a cop if I was pulled over for something.

Last weekend, I kind of freaked out the valets at the hotel in Austin. I got out grabbed my pistol and moved it to my "trunk". It's a Tuffy locking trunk in the floorboard. I locked it up and gave him my valet key. I didn't even think about it because that's what I do every time I valet. When I looked up after locking it both of the young Latino men were just kind of staring at me all wide-eyed.

ETA: I feel kind of bad for that.

I also roll the window down, turn off the ignition and put the keys on top of the dashboard. I get my papers ready while the LEO is in his car running my plates.

Basically, I follow the lead of the LEO. When he wants me to pull over, he'll hit me w/ his lights. If he wants me to step out of the vehicle, he'll ask me to do so. If he wants to know if I have a gun in the vehicle, he'll ask me.

OTOH, when I'mv carrying concealed, I hand my cc card to the LEO w/ my driver's license w/o announcing it to him. I travel in a number of different states and I find it easier to do same thing in each state as opposed to trying to remember whether the state I'm in a "must inform" state or not.
